Flash flood submergence is one of the natural hazards of rice production which is becoming more abundant due to global climate change. Efforts were undertaken to validate the performance of Sub 1-entries and to find out the optimum management options for submergence tolerant rice varieties in T. Aman season, 2008-09. Nine genotypes along with two checks were evaluated to validate the performance of sub I-entries under natural flash flood condition at farmer's field, Kachirchar, Kurigram in 2009 and there was flash flood for the duration of 16 days. In this trial, the highest survival (%) was obtained from IR64-Subl (92%) followed by Swarna-Sub 1 (78%) and Sambha Mahshuri-Sub 1 (75%). Swarna-Sub 1 produced 4.1 t/ha grain yield which was around 1. 7 ton more than the check variety Swarna. Simultaneously another evaluation of those entries was done under controlled submergence (14 days), rainfed and double transplanted condition at BRRI, Regional station Rangpur. Average performance of all the entries reflected that highest yield performance was obtained from double transplanted (5.0 t/ha) followed by rainfed trial (4.0 t/ha) and controlled submergence trial (3.5 t/ha). Another experiment was conducted at BRRI Regional station Rangpur under controlled submergence in 2008-09 for optimum management options considering three genotypes, nitrogen and potassium application time as treatment. Regarding management option top dressing of urea and potassium within 10 days after subsiding flash flood followed by weeding and sanitation was best in which survival 66% and grain yield 4.6 t/ha, respectively and Potassium application as 50% basal+ 25%after desubmergence + 25% at 5 days before PI was most effective.

To find the optimum management for crop having experienced submergence tolerant genotype to increase field level yield.

To validate the performance of sub1-entries the experiment was conducted at farmer's field (Kachir char, Kurigram) and BRRI Regional station Rangpur in T. Aman season 2009. Nine submergence tolerant high yielding genotypes BRll-Sub1, Swarna-Sub1, Sambha Mahshuri-Sub1, IR64-Sub1, IR85260-66-217 -Gaz2, IR85260-66-654-Gaz2, IR85620-66-769-Gaz2, IR85620-391-217, 1R85260-391-1192 using Swarna and BRll as check varieties were evaluated under natural flash flooding submergence condition at farmers field and at Rangpur Regional station under controlled submergence (14 days), rainfed and double transplanted condition. Thirty days old seedlings were transplanted using 2-3 seedlings per hill with the spacing of 25-X 15 cm. The unit plot size was 5.4 m x 12 rows. Fertilizer doses were as per prescription specific to the corresponding AEZ (45-20-60-10-4 kg NPKSZn/ha). Total amount of TSP, Gypsum and Zinc Sulphate and two-third MP were applied at the time of final land preparation. Urea was applied in two splits. At first, 45 kg/ha urea and one-third MP were applied at 10 days after de submergence and secondly another 45 kg urea/ha was applied at 20- 25 days after first application of urea. Sanitation was done at 7 days after subsiding of water. Furadan 5 G was applied twice along with first and second top dress of urea fertilizer. Insecticide viz. Marshal 20 EC was sprayed at 7 and 20 DAS (30 ml/10 liter water for 200 m area) to avoid the infestation of tungro. For management options the trial was conducted in controlled condition at BRRI Regional Station, Rangpur experimental farm during T. Aman, 2009. The entries ( BRll-Sub1, Swarna-Sub 1 and IR85260-66-654-Gaz2,), nitrogen application time (5 days after desubmergence, 10 days after desubmergence, and 15 days after desubmergence) and potassium in different splits (2/3 basal + 1/3 top dress at 10 days after flood water recession, 50% basal +25% after flood water recession + 25% 5 days before PI, and 100% basal) were used as treatment variables. Submergence Tolerant Rice Varieties. Fertilizers such as full TSP, Gypsum and Zinc sulphate were applied as basal @ 100-56-10 kg/ha respectively before transplanting. Urea and Potassium was applied @ of 90 kg/ha and 120 kg/ha respectively. Weeding and sanitation was done at 5 -Days after de-submergence and then survived plants counted based on green color of stem/leaf. Quality seedlings were raised by using low seed rate and cow dung (2 kg/m2). Seeds were soaked on 18 June and transplanted on 18 July. Thirty-day-old seedlings were transplanted having single seedling per hill with a spacing of 20-x 20 cm. The unit plot size was 5- X 2 m. The crop was submerged at the depth of 80 cm for 14 days after 10 days of transplanting. First, water level was gradually increased by 3 days, and then water level was kept 15-20 cm above leaf tip. Finally, water level was decreased gradually by 3 days. The experiment was laid out by split- split design (nitrogen in main plot, potassium in sub plot and variety in sub- sub plot) with two replications.

Under natural flash flood condition at farmer's field of Kachirchar, Kurigram highest survival ('!lil) was obtained from IR64-Sub 1 followed by Swarna-Sub 1 and Sambha Mahshuri-Sub 1. Swarna-Sub 1 produced highest grain yield among the Sub I-entries and two times higher than the check variety Swarna. At BRRI Regional station Rangpur, average performance of all the entries reflected that highest yield performance was obtained from double transplanted condition. Regarding management option top dressing of urea and potassium within 10 days after subsiding flash flood followed by weeding and sanitation was best and in Potassium application as 50% basal+ 25% after desubmergence + 25% at 5 days before PI was most effective.
