A field experiment was carried out at Trishal thana in Mymensingh district during 27 December to 8 May 1998 to study the effect of irrigation regimes and nitrogen levels on the yield and yield contributing characters of maize (cv. Bornali). The experiment was carried with two factors, namely, three irrigation treatments, i) .00 cm (no irrigation), 20 crn irrigation (10 cm at 40 days after sowing DAS + 10 cm at 55 DAS) and 40 cm irrigation (10 crn at 40 DAS + 10 cm at 55 DAS + 10 cm at 75 DAS + 10 cm at 96 DAS), and ii) four nitrogen levels i.e. 00 (no nitrogen), 50, 100 and 120 kg N ha-1. Application of 40 cm irrigation water significantly increased grain yield from 3.33 to 3.97 t ha-1 and 100 grain weight from 23.30 to 25.50 g compared with other irrigation treatments. Application of 120 kg N ha-1 also significantly increased grain yield from 3.03 to 3.95 t ha-1 and 100 grain weight from 22.80 to 25.06 g compared with other nitrogen treatments. The interaction effect of irrigation and nitrogen significantly increased the yield and yield contributing characters of maize. The highest yield of 4.73 t ha-1 was found with the application of 40 cm irrigation and 100 kg N ha-1 which was 225% higher over control.

To evaluate the effect of irrigation and nitrogen of the performance of maize.

The experiment was conducted at Kazirshimla Farming Systems and Environmental Studies site during 27 December 1997 to 8 May 1998 in order to evaluate the effects of irrigation and nitrogen on the performance of maize. The experimental soils were silty clay to clay loam. The reaction of the soil was slightly alkali. The land was opened on 15 December 1997 with the help of country plough. It was further ploughed and cross ploughed followed by laddering for breaking the clods and leveling the land. The land was cleaned by removing he weds, stubble etc. Three farmers' fields were selected for experimentation as replication. These fields were divided into three main plots and each main plot was divided into four sub plots. The unit plot size was 2.5 m x 4 (10 sq. m). The experiment included two treatments - (1) three irrigation regimes viz. 00 cm (no irrigation), 20 cm (10 cm at 40 day after sowing (DAS + 10 cm at 55 DAS), 40 cm (10 cm at 40 DAS + 10 cm at 55 DAS+10 cm at 75 DAS + 10 cm at 95 DAS) and (ii) four nitrogen levels i.e. 0, 50, 100 and 120 kg N ha-1 . Triple super phosphate (TSP) and muriate of potash (MP) was applied at the rate of 100 kg P205 and 80 kg K20 (BARC, 1997), respectively. The whole quantity of TSP, MP and one-third of the nitrogen were applied at the time of final land preparation. The rest of urea was applied in two equal splits at 35 and 65 DAS. Maize seeds were sown on 27 December 1997 by dropping seeds by hand with spacing 40 cm x 20 cm.

Plant height, ear plant-1 kernel ear-1 grain yield, stover yield and 100 grain weight significantly increased due to application of irrigation water. Highest plant height (2.03 m), number of ears plant- 1 (1.23), ear length (19.57 cm), grain yield (3.97 t ha-1 ), stover yield (6.49 t ha-1 and 100 grain weight (25.50 g) were observed with the application of 40 cm irrigation water and were statistically significant in comparison with the other treatment. Highest number of kernel ear-1 and harvest index were also found with 40 cm irrigation water but were not statistically significant compared with other irrigation treatment. Yield and yield contributing characters were statistically identical between 20 cm irrigation water and with control except ear plant-1 and ear length.Moisture content in control was low compared to the other treatments.  It has been seen that 40 cm. irrigation treatments curve increased gradually from 30 to 60 DAS but gradually decreased from 60 to 120 DAS. It can also be seen that 40 cm irrigation treatment curve is flatter than control because irrigation was given 4 times during the growing period of maize.
