A Study of Flower Production and Abscission in Country Bean (lablab Purpureus)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted to investigate flower production, floral abscission and flowering pattern in 10 genotypes of country bean. Results revealed that the total number of flowers per plant varied between 1682 and 4722 while percentage floral abscission varied between 73.29 and 82.72 among the genotypes studied. Results also showed that flower production within the individual inflorescence decreased from the proximal nodes (Basal) towards the distal nodes (top). In general, the first flowers formed between first and fourth , proximal nodes produced greater number of pods and mature seeds. Results indicate that probable genotypic variations in flower production and floral abscission exist among these genotypes in country bean.

Objectives:

To investigate i) the flower production, ii) floral abscission and iii) flowering pattern in 10 genotypes of country bean.

Methodology:

A field experiment was conducted at IPSA, Salna, Gazipur, in 1997 during ' rabi' season with 10 genotypes of country bean [Lablab purpureus (L.) Wallp.] viz., Sitakunda, Burmiz, Bar-chai, Deshi-chai, BARI-1, Japanese, IPSA-1, Kartika, Puti-Anaj and Noldog. The experiment was layed out in a randomized complete block design with four replications. The seedlings were raised in poly bag with two seeds in each. Finally one healthy seedling from each poly bag was transplanted in the plot (5 m x 1 m) of the main field during the 1st week of October, 1997. The inter and intra plant spacing was 2 m and 1 m, respectively. The individual plant was supported by bamboo sticks. The recommended cultural and management practices were followed

Achievement/Findings:

Total number of flowers (TNF) production per plant. Total number of flower production was significant (P:50.01) among the varieties and it varied between 1682 in IPSA-I and 4722 in Kartika. Total number of flowers is a function of the number of inflorescence per plant, number nodes per inflorescence and number of flowers per node. All the components were separately significant among the variety studied. Therefore, variation in these components resulted differences in TNF. The number of inflorescence per plant varied between 115 in Kartika and 50 in Bar-chai while the number of nodes per inflorescence varied between 5.40 in Noldog and 7.43 in Kartika, and number of flowers per node varied between 4.07 in Japanese and 7.3 in Noldog. The number of inflorescence per plant, number of nodes per inflorescence and number of flowers per node was significantly highest in Kartika and therefore it produced the highest TNF. the number of nodes per inflorescence and flowers per node was intermediate in Deshi chai and IPSA-I but it could not be compensated by very low inflorescence per plant. Therefore, these varieties produced the lowest TNF. The results suggested that there was a genotypic variation in number of inflorescence per plant, number of nodes/inflorescence and number of flowers/node and thus variation in TNF. This results further indicate that there is a scope to select desirable ones.It may be concluded that genotypic variation for flower production was observed. Generally earlier formed flowers, between first and fourth nodes, had higher probability of setting pods and produced mature pods. Further, abscission of f lowers and unopened buds plus immature pods varied between 73.29 and 82.72% indicating a probable genetic differences for abscission among these country bean genotypes.
