Phenotypic and Genotypic Correlation and Path Analysis in Spring Wheat

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted at Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during 1995-96 with a view to estimating phenotypic and genotypic correlations of different characters of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Grain yield/m2 and biomass/m2 showed high positive correlation with effective tillers/m2 at both phenotypic (significant) and g Biomass/m2 also had positive phenotypic (significant) and genotypic correlations with grain yield/m2 and plant height. The correlation between harvest index and plant height was significant and negative at phenotypic level. Biomass/m2 and harvest index showed high positive direct effect on grain yield/m2 . But there were low positive direct effects for effective tillers/m2 and negative for plant height. Effective tillers/m2 and plant height had high positive indirect effects on grain yield/m2 via biomass/m2 . However, considerable negative indirect effect on grain yield/m2 was exhibited by plant height via harvest index. Harvest index also showed considerable negative indirect effect on grain yield/m2 via biomass/m2 .

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Field Laboratory of the Field Laboratory of Genetic and Plant Breeding, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during 1995-96. The soil was sandy loam having pH value ranges from 6.5-6.6. The temperature range was 10°C- 340C and the rainfall was very poor during the wheat growing season i.e. November to March. Twenty five genotypes of were used as materials of the experiment. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. The unit plot size was 5m x 4m. Seeds were sown on 23rd November 1995 at the rate of 120 kg/ha in 20cm apart lines. Recommended doses of fertilizers were used and normal cultural practices were• followed during the growing period of the crop. No insecticide and fungicide were used. The crop was harvested after full maturity of he grain and straw. Data on effective tiller/m2 , plant height (em), grain yield/m2 , biomass/m and harvest index were collected and analyzed statistically for phenotypic and genotypic correlation (Johnson et a/., 1955) and then path analysis (Dewey and Lu, 1959).
