Losses to Stored Rice Casused by Rice Weevil and Angoumois Grain Moth, and Their Control in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Experiments were carried out in the laboratory with the rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzao (Linnaeus) and the angoumois grain moth. Sitotroga cerea/ells (Olivier ) to assess the losses to stored rice caused by them and the efficacy of sevin 10% dust and Gardona 75% W. P. at three different doses. The rice weevil caused 11 to 16% wt. loss of husked rice as compared to 4 to 5% caused by angoumois grain moth in 4 months of infestation. Unhusked rice suffered only about 1% wt. loss due to the infestation of both the insects. Doses as low as 15 ppm (a. i.) of sevin 10% dust and 5 ppm (a. i.) of Gardona 75% W. P. were effective to cause high mortality of the insects, Insecticide application did not affect the grain germination.

Objectives:

To assess the losses caused by rice weevil and angoumois grain moth to different types of paddy and rice including their control with two promising insecticides.

Methodology:

There were three types Studies on the rice weevil, Sitop hilus oryzae (Unnaeus) and angoumois grain moth, Sitotroga cerealella ( Oli vier ) were conducted in the laboratory of the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute ( BRRI) from July, 1981 to July, 1982. The following major aspects were studied : (a) Extent of loss and (b) effecctiveness of two promising insecticides. The ranges of maximum and minimum temperature of the laboratory were 25-28.33°C and 22.78-26.670C during December February and 26.67-36.67°C and 23.89-34.44⁰C during March-July, respectively. The insects were mass reared under laboratory conditions. A set of eight clean glass jars measuring 14 X 10 cm were used for rearing each of the two test insects. Each jar was filled half of its height (about of grains : (a) Unhusked-unparboiled (b) Husked-parboiled and (c) Husked unparboiled. The grains were par boiled and husked from the Rice Technology Division ( BRRI ). The moisture content of unhusked-unpar boiled rice was 13.94%, that of husked parboiled rice was 15.42% and that of husked-unparboiled rice was 11.54%. The moisture content of the grains were taken by the help of Satake Moisture Meter. The samples were weighed in an electronic balance. The test samples were taken in clean glass jars 14 X 10 cm. Each glass jar contained 50 gms of the sample. The jars were covered with thin tin lid with 10 small holes for aeration. The experiment to assess the extent of lost caused by Sitophilus oryzae was conducted from July to October, 1981.

Achievement/Findings:

The damage caused by the rice weevil and angou mois grain moth was significantly different Unhusked-unnarboiled rice was least damaged by both the insects compared to the husked-parboiled and husked-unparboiled rice at any period of insfeststion. The highest amount of weight loss on unhusked-unparboled rice after 4 months of infestation by rice weevil and angoumois grain month-was only 1.18 and 1.16% respectively as compared to 11.44 and 4.5% on husked-parboiled and 16.05 and 4.28% on husked-parboiled rice. The damage dona by husked-parboiled and husked-unparboiled samples in 4 months by rice weavil and angoumois grain moth was about 9-13 times higher respectively than that caused to unhusked- unparboiled rice. The amount of weight loss with husked-par boiled and huskad-unparboiled rice as affected by the feeding of the two insects did not very significantly, except the loss to husked-unparboiled rice caused by rice weevil at 120 days after infestation. The data strongly indir.ated that the rice weevil preferred husked- unparboiled rice and caused the highest amount of loss (16% wt. loss).
