Effect of Sowing Time and Seed Rate on the Yield of Barley

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment on the effect of sowing time and seed rate on the yield of barley was conducted at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jamalpur during the two consecutive rabi seasons of 1993-94 and 1994-95. The objective was to find out a suitable time of sowing as well as an optimum seed rate. Four sowing times (November 5, November 20, December 5 and December 20) and four seed rates (80 kg/ha, 100 kg/ha, 120 kg/ha and 140 kg/ha) were included in the study. The experiment was conducted in a split-plot design with three replications. The variety used was Conquest. The results revealed that different times of sowing had significant influences on the yield. Higher seed rate produced higher yield, but the difference between 120 kg/ha and 140 kg/ha seed rate did not differ significantly in respect of yield. Averaged over two years, the highest grain yield was recorded when barley was sown on November 20. The lowest yield was recorded from December 20 sowing. Seed rate of 140 kg/ha produced highest grain yield. The interaction effect of sowing time and seed rate was found insignificant in both the years.

Objectives:

To find out a suitable time of sowing as well as an optimum seed rate of barley for maximum yield in Jamalpur region.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at RARS, Jamalpur during two consecutive rabi seasons of 1993-94 and 1994-95. The treatments included four times of sowing viz, i) November 5, ii) November 20, iii) December 5 and iv) December 20 and four seed rates viz. i) 80 kg/ha, ii) 100 kg/ha, iii) 120 kg/ha and iv) 140 kg/ha. December 20 sowing was included in the treatment in 1994-95. The experimental was conducted in a split-plot design with three replications. The time of sowing was arranged in the main plot while the different seed rate were in the sub-plot. The unit plot size was 3m x 4m. The land was fertilized with 80 kg N, 40 kg P₂0₅, and 40 kg K₂0 per hectare through Urea, Triple Super Phosphate (TSP) and Muriate of Potash (MP). The entire amount f Urea, TSP and MP were applied at the time of final land preparation. Seeds of the variety conquest were used as the planting materials. Seeds were treated with Vitavex 200 against foot rot disease. One hand weeding was performed at 25 days after each sowing. Soil samples were collected to a depth of 0-15 cm, 15-30 cm and 30-60 cm from all plots at the time of seeding and also at every 15 days interval from seeding to harvest. Soil moisture percentage by weight was determined gravimetrically from the composite sample by oven drying at 105°C for 72 hours. The crop sown at different dates were harvested at different times. The crops were harvested from March 29-31 in 1994. In 1994-95, November 5 sowing were harvested on March 11, November 20 on March 20. December 5 and December 20 sowing on March 27 and April 8 respectively. Ten randomly selected plants were collected separately from each plot for data collection. The grain and straw yield was recorded plot wise. The collected data were analysed statistically and the means were separated with DMRT.
