Growth and Yield of Wheat as Affected by Planting Method and Variety in the Coastal Area of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), Regional Station Farm, Sonagazi, Feni from November 1994 to March 1995 to find out the suitable planting method and wheat variety for the coastal area (Charland ) of the South-Eastern part of Bangladesh. The study included two varieties of wheat viz (i) Kanchan and (ii) Akbar and, three panting method i.e. (i) Broadcasting, (ii) Furrow sowing and (iii) Dibbling. The results revealed that, there was no varietal differences on the production of different crop characters like number of effective tillers, number of grains ea(1 , 1000- grain weight, ear length, grain and straw yields. Planting methods had significant influence on the above mentioned characters, except grain number ea(1. Dibbling method produced the highest yields of grain and straw, number of effective tiller, 1000-grain weight, but significant differences were not observed between dibbling and furrow sowing for numt:;er of effective tiller m•2 , and 1000-grain weight.

Objectives:

To determine the suitable planting method and variety of wheat for the coastal area of Bangladesh

Methodology:

The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications having unit plot size of 20 m²^.The fertilizers used were 80, 40, 60 kg ha-1 of N, P₂0₅, and K₂0 from urea, triple super phosphate (TSP) and muriate of potash (MP), respectively. Half of the urea and whole amount of TSP and MP were applied at the time of the final land preparation. The rest of the urea was top-dressed in two equal splits at 25 and 45 days after seeding (DAS). The weeding and other cultural operations were done as and when necessary. The crop was harvested plot wise at 80% maturity. Data on yield contributing characters were recorded from randomly selected 20 plants from each plot. The grain and straw yields were collected from the whole plot basis . The collected data were analyzed statistically and the mean values of the treatments for each character were compared by following the Duncan's New Multiple Range Test.
