Thirty manually operated treadle pumps were tested under the field conditions at the Char Nilokhya union of Mymensingh district to evaluate their performance. The overall performance of these treadle pumps was evaluated with respect of the depth of water table, discharge capacity and speed of the pumps and command area served by the pumps. The depth of static ground water level in the Char Nilokhya union varied from 4.12 to 5.52 m with an average depth of 4.74 m. The area was suitable for the operation of treadle pumps, since the ground water table remained within the suction limit of the pumps (7.4 m). The average speed of the 30 treadle pumps varied from 63.76 to 73.52 stroke/minute with an overall average value of 68.05 stroke/minute. The speeds, which were measured by operating the pumps with an adult man of average body size, increased with the increasing suction head. This is a reverse relationship in relation to the principle of the pump performance and was caused due to the manual operation of the pumps. The discharges of the pumps varied from 0.48 to 0.64 1 /s with an average of 0.56 1 /s. The discharges of the pumps decreased with the increasing suction head because, at the higher suction head the energy requirement increased tor a constant discharge. The command area of the 30 treadle pumps varied from 10 to 60 decimals with an average of 28 decimals. The farmers in the study area preferably irrigated data (a vegetable), pumpkin, chilli, gourd and cucumber using  treadle pumps.

  Performance evaluation

(i)To determine the discharge of he treadle pumps at different suction heads, (ii) to determine the discharge of the treadle pumps a different operating speeds, and (iii) to determine the command area for the treadle pumps.

A total of 30 treadle pumps in 3 villages (Tumpara, Dighlapara and Naya para) in the study area were tested each for five different numbers of strokes (10, 15, 20, 25 and 30). These different strokes were selected to increase the operating time in order to evaluate the effect of operating time on the pump discharge. Each pump was tested on 5 different dates (9, 16, 23, 30 April and 7 May, 1995) to encounter the different depths of static ground water table. The procedural schedule of the complete test with one treadle pump is schematically shown. All the tests were conducted by an adult man of average body size and health. During the operation of the pumps, the number of strokes was counted for every time. A cylinder was filled with the pump discharge for a known period of time, which was measured by a stop watch. The collected water was then measured with a measuring cylinder and the pump discharge was calculated by dividing the total volume of water by the recorded time. Dividing the number of strokes by the time spent, the pump speed (stroke/min) was determined. The average  discharges  of the 30 treadle  Pump were calculated  from the measured  volume  of water and the recorded  time. The average  speeds  of the pumps  were also calculated.  The coefficients  of variation of the discharges  were determined  to evaluate the  variation   of  the  discharges   among  the  30  treadle  pumps  tested.  The  relationships between  the  head  and  speed,  and  the  head  and  discharge  of  the  treadle  pumps  were established.

The depth of the static ground water level in the Char Nilokhya union varied from 4.12 to 5.52 m with an average depth of 4.74 m during 9 April 1995 to 7 May 1995. This depth of the water level was smaller than the suction limit of the treadle pumps during the dry months (study period). The area was suitable for the operation of the treadle pumps throughout the year. The average speed of the 30 treadle pumps varied from 63.36 to 73.52 stroke/minute with an overall average value of 68.05 stroke/minute. The speed of the pumps increased with the increasing head, which is a reverse relation to the general rule of the pump performance. The average discharge of the pumps varied from 0.48 to 0:64 1/s with an average value of 0.56 1/s. The command area of H:3 30 treadle pumps varied from 10 to 60 decimals with an average command area of 28 decimals. In the study area, farmers preferred in irrigating vegetables/crops like data, pumpkin, chilli, gourd, cucumber, etc. Most of the farmers expressed their opinion that, there should still be a better technology, which would be appropriate for their small farms. This technology should be cheap but would not require manual power. They also opined that the operation of the treadle pumps was a very laborious job. Further research should, therefore, be conducted for the evaluation and mechanical development of the treadle pumps.
