Factors Influencing Agricultural Knowledge of the Selected Groups of Proshika Manobic Unnayan Kendra in a Coastal Area of Noakhali District

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The respondents of this study were the members of landless and marginal farmer's group of Tomuroddin Union oganized by Proshika-MUK Hatia Development Centre under Noakhali District. The main purpose was to determine the factors influencing landless and marginal farmers' agricultural knowledge. Agricultural knowledge of the respondents constituted the dependent variable, whereas nine selected factors were the independent variables. Data were collected personally through interview schedule from 120 randomly selected respondent during October to December, 1994. Findings indicate that most (80 percent) of the respondents had medium or low agricultural knowledge , while only 20 percent had high agricultural knowledge. Correlation analysis shows that age, land possession and printed materials exposure had no significant relation with agricultural knowledge of the respondents while other six independent variable such as education, family income, organizational participation, extension contact, previous training and fatalism had significant relationship. Path analysis was done with the six significant independent variables and the finding indicate that previous training had adequate, fatalism had appreciable, family income had low, extension contact and organizational participation had very low, and education had negligible direct influence on agricultural knowledge of the respondents. All the six factors had indirect influence from negligible to appreciable extent. The indirect influence was also channeled mostly through previous training and fatalism. Fatalism had negative influence, while the other five factors had positive influence.

Objectives:

To determine and describe the extent of agricultural knowledge of the selected groups of Proshika-MUK with special emphasis on crop-based farming, and to explore the direct and indirect effects of nine selected factors on the agricultural knowledge of the selected groups of Proshika-MUK with identification of variables through which indirect effects are channeled.

Methodology:

Hatia is a Thana of Noakhali District and also an Area Development Centre (ADC) of a non-government organization i.e. Proshika-MUk. Tomuruddin is a Union under Hatia ADC, It is a coastal area of Bangladesh where no study has been conducted by any organization on the agricultural knowledge. There were 19 male groups organized by Proshika-MUK in Tomuruddin Union, each group consisting of 12-30 members of landless and marginal farmers. The 19 groups combinedly had 350 male members, which constituted the population for this study. For having a representative sample, 10 groups wee randomly selected from 19 groups and then 12 individuals were selected randomly from each selected group. One hundred and twenty landless and marginal farmers of Tomuruddin Union so selected constituted the sample for this study. Data were collected from the sample by interview procedure with the help of interview schedule during October to December, 1994. Agricultural knowledge of the landless and marginal farmers constituted the dependent variable of this study. Nine characteristics of the respondents were selected as independent variables. These nine characteristics were age, education, land possession, family income, organizational participation, extension contact, printed materials exposure, previous training and fatalism.

Achievement/Findings:

Agricultural knowledge of the landless and marginal farmers was measured by using 25 questions related to crop varieties, soil, fertilizer, insect pest and diseases, and cultural practices which had assigned scores. The assigned score for each question was 2 and the total assigned score for all the questions was 50. A respondent answering a question correctly obtained the full score while for wrong answer he obtained zero score. Scores were deducted for partial answer. The total score obtained by a respondent was taken as his agricultural knowledge scores. It was found that agricultural knowledge scores of the respondents ranged from 8 to 32 with a mean and standard deviation of 18.70 and 4.89, respectively. The possible range was from 0 to 50, where 0 indicated no agricultural knowledge and 50 indicated very high agricultural knowledge. The respondents wee classified into low, medium and high agricultural knowledge categories on the basis of mean and standard deviation.Analysis of data indicates that majority (54 percent) of the respondents had low family income and rest 46 percent had medium family income. No body had high family income. So, steps showed be taken to provide loan to the landless and marginal farmers to increase their family income which will increase their agricultural knowledge by making some other favourable factors available for their own success.
