Effect of Salinity at Different Growth Stages of Summer Mungbean Genotypes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot experiment was conducted at the potyard of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh during the period from February to April 2007 to observe the effect of salinity at pre-flowering, flowering and pod formation stages of five mungbean genotypes viz., BARI mung-5, E₄J-207, E₁.I-603, N₄J-210 and E₅I-913. The results revealed that the effects of salinity at different growth stages of mungbean genotypes were significant on all the morpholgical parameters, yield attributes, yield and harvest index. Salinity at pod formation stage showed the highest detrimental effect followed by salinity at pre-flowering stage. The highest values of the above parameters were found in control. Among the genotypes, E₁J-603 showed superiority in most of the parameters followed by BARI mung-5 and N₄J-210. The lowest values of the parameters were recorded in E₄J-207. The decrement of plant height, number of leaves, stem dry matter, leaf dry matter, pod dry matter, total dry matter, yield and yield attributes due to salinity was less in E₁J-603 and BRRI mung-5 than the others. Among the five genotypes E₁J-603 and BARI mung-5 showed better performance under salinity.

Objectives:

The objectives of the study were to observe the effect of salinity at pre-flowering, flowering and pod formation stages of mungbean genotypes and to find out salt tolerant mungbean genotype.

Methodology:

A pot experiment was conducted at the potyard of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh during 28 February to 12 April 2007. Five genotypes ofmungbean namely, BARI mung-5, E₄J-207, E₁.I-603, N₄J-210 and E5I-913 were included in the study to assess their performances on morphological parameters, yield and yield attributes under salinity of 5 dSm^-1 at pre-flowering, flowering and pod formation stage along with a control where no salt was applied. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The experimental unit was plastic pots. There were 120 pots under the study. The seeds were sown directly in the pots. Data were recorded at 45 DAS to collect some morpho-phygiological parameters namely, plant height, number of branches plant^-1, number of leaves plant^-1, leaf area plant^-1, dry weight of root, dry weight of stem, dry weight of leaves, dry weight of pods, total dry matter plant^-1. Number of pods plant^-1, number of seeds plant^-1, 1000-seed weight, seed yield plant^-1 and harvest index were also recorded at maturity. The recorded data were analyzed using MSTAT-C package where mean differences were compared by DMRT.

Salinity at pod formation stage of mungbean genotypes showed the highest detrimental effect followed by salinity at pre-flowering stage. The highest values of the above parameters were found in control. Among the genotypes, E₁J-603 showed superiority in most of the parameters followed by BARI mung-5 and N₄J-210. The lowest values of the parameters were recorded in E₄J-207. Interaction effect of salinity at different growth stages and genotypes was significant on all the parameters except plant height and number of primary branches. The decrement of plant height, number of leaves, stem dry matter, leaf dry matter, pod dry matter, total dry matter, yield and yield attributes due to salinity was less in E₁J-603 and BARI mung-5 than the others. Among the five genotypes E₁J-603 and BARI mung-5 showed better performance under salinity.
