Three ICARDA lines (ICARDA-44123, ICARDA-44209 and ICARDA-44210), six mutant lines (ML-18, ML-20, ML-22, ML-42, ML-442, and ML-478) and a check cultivarL-5 of lentil were grown under residual moisture condition at Tajhat, Rangpur during 1994-95. Some selected genotypes (IC-44123, IC-4429, IC44210, ML-22, ML-442, and L-5) were again evaluated in the next year. The ICARDA lines were comparatively taller, produced more primary branches and higher biomass but showed lower harvest indices and longer crop duration than most of the mutant lines and local cultivarL-5. The line IC-44123 showed higher seed weight than L-5. ML-18, ML-20, ML-22 and ML-42 outyielded L-5 and matured 11-19 days earlier than the ICARDA lines but showed almost similar crop duration with L-5. ML-442 and ML-478 showed longer crop duration than L-5. Crop growth rate and net assimilation rate of different lines showed peaks at 60 days after sowing and were distinctly higher, medium and low in ICARDA lines, mutant lines and L-5 respectively. Chlorophyll contents varied amongst the varieties. Yield improvements of ICARDA lines with higher harvest indices and mutant lines with higher crop growth rate or total dry matter could be the basis of future programs.

The objective of the study was to compare the suitability of mutants and ICARDA lines of lentil in Bangladesh climatic condition.

Three ICARDA lines (IC-44123, IC-44209 and IC-44210), 6 mutant lines (ML-18, ML-20, ML-22, ML-42, ML-442, and ML-478) and the check cultivar L-5 were grown at Tajhat, Rangpur, Sub-station of the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, in the winter season of 1994-95 under residual moisture condition. The design of the experiment was RCBD with 3 replications. A unit plot size was 3m x 2m. The row to row spacing was 28 cm and plant to plant was 6 cm. A second experiment was followed next year (1995-96) with 4 selected genotypes viz., IC-44123, IC-4209, ML-22, ML-442, and the check L-5 for the conformity of the results of the first experiment. A total of 6 harvests was made, starting at the age of 30 days after sowing (DAS), with the first experiment only yield and yield component data were taken. The leaf area and total dry matter were recorded from randomly selected 10 plants. Crop growth rate (CGR) and net assimilation rates (NAR) were calculated from the mean leaf area and total dry matter following formulae of Radford, 1967. At maturity, numbers of primary branches per plant, total dry matter (TDM)/m2, yield per m2 and days to maturity were recorded. Total chlorophyll was estimated according to the method of Arnon (1949). DMRT tests were performed in evaluating the mean data. The data of temperature and humidity are plotted at 10 day's intervals that represent the mean values of daily maximum and minimum records for 10 days. The rainfall data also presented in the same figures. Soil moisture percentages of the experimental field were determined at 10 day's intervals. For this, samples at the depth of plough pan levels were collected and fresh and oven dry weights were recorded. The soil moisture percentage was calculated finally using these data.
