Correlation and Path Co-efficient Analysis in Tomato

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The correlation and path co-efficient between yield and seven other yield contributing characters were studied in 44 varieties/lines of tomato. Among the characters, highest magnitude of positive and significant correlation was observed between yield and number of fruit/plant which was followed by plant height. The number of fruits/plant was negatively and significantly correlated with weight of individual fruit, number of locules per fruit and number of seeds per fruit. Yield/plant also showed significant negative association with days to flowering. Most of the yield components showed positive correlation among themselves and contributed to the total yield per plant. Path co-efficient analysis indicated that the maximum direct contribution towards yield was through number of fruits per plant and number of locules per fruit.

Objectives:

To analyze the association between yield and seven other yield contributing characters of tomato through simple correlation and path correlation analysis.

Methodology:

The experimental materials consisted of 44 varieties/lines of tomato maintained in the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, BAU. The materials were grown in the winter season of 1993-94 at the experimental farm of the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, BAU, Mymensingh. Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications was used. The unit plot size was 3 sq.m. (3m x 1 m) with two rows in a plot and 10 plants in each row. The inter- and intra- row spacings were 60 cm and 50 cm, respectively. N as Urea, P as Triple Super Phosphate (TSP) and K as Muriate of Potash @ 140, 185, 50 kg/ha, respectively were applied. Cowdung (CD, 10 t/ha) and Mustard Oil Cake (MOC, 350 kg/ha). were also applied as manures. The whole quantity of CD, MOC, TSP, MP and half of Urea were applied during land preparation. The remaining amount of Urea was applied in two splits, one at 15 DAT and the other a week before flowering. After transplanting the seedlings were properly irrigated for 4 consecutive days and flood irrigation was given to the plants after each top dressing of urea. First mulching and weeding were done uniformly in all the plots. Second weeding was done after 20 days of the first one. In order to prevent disease infestation "Redumil" was used for six times at an interval of 7 days from 23 November to 28 December, 1993. Data were recorded on ten randomly selected plants in each genotype for eight different characters. Correlation Co-efficients between yield and yield contributing characters were calculated at genotypic and phenotypic levels using the formula as suggested by Searly (1961). Path co-efficient analysis was performed using genetic correlation co-efficients following the method of Dewey and LU (1959).

Achievement/Findings:

Study of correlation and path co-efficients indicated that the number of fruits per plant was most important character related to the fruit yield per plant. The character was positively related and had highest direct effect on yield per plant. Therefore selection for number of fruits per plant would give better response for yield improvement in tomato.
