Effect of Naphthalene Acetic Acid and Gibberellic Acid on Yield and Yield Attributes of French Bean (phaseolus Vulgaris L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted to determine the suitable concentrations of NAA and GA3 for obtaining higher growth and yield of French bean. Two concentration of NAA (100 and 200 ppm) and two concentrations of GA₃ (10 and 50 ppm) were sprayed twice one at 20 DAS after sowing and the other at 40 DAS. All the concentrations of NAA and GA₃ significantly performed better on yield and yield attributes compared to control. Spraying of 50 ppm of GA₃ showed the best performance with regard to highest plant height, pod length, pod yield, number of seeds per pod, 1000 seed weight, seed yield. Naphthalene Acetic Acid sprayed at 100 ppm twice exhibited the highest leaves. flowers and pods per plant. Gibberellic Acid of 50 ppm and Naphthalene Acetic Acid of 100 ppm sprayed twice showed better yield performance.

Objectives:

To determine the suitable concentrations of NAA and GA₃ for obtaining higher growth and yield of French bean.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out in the field laboratory of the Department of Crop Botany, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during 22 November 1996 to 20 February, 1997. The soil of the farm was sandy loam in texture. The land was prepared by ploughing and cross ploughing followed by laddering. Urea, T.S.P., M.P. were applied at the rate of 20, 60 and 40 kg/ha respectively. All the fertilizers were applied at the time of final land preparation. Cowdung was applied in the field 15 days before final land preparation at the rate of 1500 kg/ha. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design and replicated thrice. The size of the individual plot was 2.5 x 1.5 m.The growth regulators selected for the study were NAA and GA₃_. Stock solutions of these chemicals were prepared by dissolving calculated quantities of the materials in distilled water with few drops of alcohol. Just before application the stock solutions were diluted to different solutions of required concentration adding distilled water. The concentrations were100 ppm and 200 ppm for NAA and 10 ppm and 50 pm for GA₃. Each of the growth regulators was sprayed twice. The first foliar application as per treatment was done at 20 days after sowing (DAS) and subsequent two at 15 days interval. The spray treatments composed of the growth regulators were-Control (T₀), 100 ppm of NAA once (T₁ ), 100 ppm of NAA twice (T₂ ), 200 ppm of NAA once (T₃), 200 ppm of NAA twice (T₄ ), 10 ppm of GA3 once (T₅), 10 ppm of GA3 twice (T₆), 50 ppm of G_A3 once (T₇) and 50 ppm of GA₃ twice (T₈ ) .
