Feasibility Study of Bamboo as Reinforcing Material in Concrete Beams

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Cubes and cylinders of standard dimensions were cast and tested in the laboratory to find out their strength behavior. A comparison of tensile strength of bamboo sticks is made with steel rods of similar dimensions. Beams of similar size were designed end constructed, some with steel reinforcement and some with bamboo cast. After crushing all these beams. their strengths were determined and compared. The average strength of bamboo was found to be 43% of the strength of steel after 28 days curing. So, bamboo should not be used in permanent concrete structures but can be used in semipermanent structures.

Objectives:

To find out the feasibility of bamboo as reinforcement in cement concretee beams.

Methodology:

For the determination of crushing strength of concrete, three 6 inches diameter cylinders and three 6 inches cubes of the proportion 1 : 2 : 4 were cast. Six inches diameter cylinders, 6 inches cubes and 3/8 inch diameter mild steel rods were tested in the lab oratory. The main object of the problem was to make a feasibility study of bamboo as reinforcing material in cement concrete structures. According to the test results of cubes,the average allowable working stress fc ( = 0.45f'c ) of concrete was 1500 psi and the average allowable working stress of steel was 27 378 psi. Considering other standard values, the beam was designed. And then, 16 singly reinforced concrete beams were made, 8 with steel reinforcement and 8 with bamboo reinforcement. In both the cases, 1/2 inch diameter rods were used. The length of the beams were 7 feet and the size of the beams were 8 x 4 inches. For stirrups, 1/4 inch diameter rod was used. A s it was of the bamboo sticks, no hook was made at the ends of the steel rods to maintain similarity.

Achievement/Findings:

According to the test results it can be concluded that bamboo should no t be used in constructing beams of heavy permanent concrete structures. Bamboo can be used as reinforcing material in low cost small and semi-permanent structures, such as guard shade, small storage structures, poultry houses etc. For the selection of mature bamboo, experienced persons should be engaged as the strength and durabity of bamboo-reinforced structures depend upon the selection of bamboo.
