Performance of Groundnut (arachis Hypogaea L) Genotypes and Relationship Between Their Yield and Yield Contributing Characters

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Twenty five genotypes of groundnut were studied for performance and relationship of different yield contributing characters and pod yield. The variety Dhaka-! was used as a check variety. Significant variations were observed among the genotypes for all the characters studied. The HYQ (CG)S-11, ICGS-30 and M-13 produced higher yield associated with higher harvest index and pods per plant over Dhaka-1. Study of correlation indicated that pod yield of groundnut had a positive and highly significant correlation with pods per plant, 100-kernels weight and harvest index. Study f path coefficient suggested that yield in groundnut was positively contributed by the direct influence of 100-kernels weight and kernels per pod. The character days to maturity and primary and secondary branches per plant influenced pod yield indirectly mainly through 100-kernels weight.

Objectives:

i) To study the performance of these varieties/lines in Bangladesh condition.

ii) To study the relationship between yield and yield contributing characters for constructing a suitable selection index for yield improvement in groundnut.

Methodology:

The present study was performed with 25 varieties/lines of groundnut having spreading growth habit. Among them 2 varieties Dhaka-1, DG-2 were from Bangladesh and remaining lines were from ICRISAT, India. The experiment was conducted at the experimental farm of the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during Rabi season 1991-92. The experiment was set up in randomised block design with three replications. The plot size was 4 m x 2 m. The plant spacing provided was 40 cm between rows and 5 cm between plants of the same row. Ten plants were selected randomly from each plot for collection of data on yield and different yield contributing characters. The characters studied were days to 50% flowering, days to maturity, plant height, number of primary branches per plant, number of secondary branches per plant, number of pods per plants, number of kernels per pod, 100-kernels weight, harvest index and yield per plant. The data were analysed for variance. The differences between means of the genotypes for yield and yield contributing characters were tested by Duncun's multiple range test. The genotypic and phenotypic correlation coefficient between yield and contributing characters were estimated according to Miller et a/., (1958). Path coefficient analysis was performed as suggested by Dewey and Lu (1959).
