Influence of Sowing Time on the Incidence of Yellow Vein Mosaic Virus of Okra in the Chittagong Region

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station of BARI at Hathazari, Chittagong during 1992. Seeds of two varieties of okra; Pusa Sawani and Green Velvet were directly sown in the field at one month interval. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with 3 replications. The unit plot size was 4 x 3 m2 . Fertilization, irrigation and other cultural practices were carried out as and when needed. Data were taken at seven days interval to record the appearence of disease symptom.

Achievement/Findings:

Results of the present experiment revealed that on an average 111, 28 and 47 days are required for initial development of the disease if the crop is planted in January-March, April September and October-December respectively. In these period POl is about 68, 86 and 20%. It does indicate that disease incidence is low in October-December period. But it is not ideal time for okra cultivation. Because okra is best grown in high temperature and humid condition. It a suitable variety is found which gives higher yield in this period seems to be very much effective in evading the disease. From the experimental result it seems the February to March is the ideal time for okra cultivation in the Chittagong region. Because in this period temperature is sufficiently high for a good crop and initial disease appearence is delayed to a considerable extent (about 106 days). But if the crop is sown in the period May to October, spraying of systemic insecticides should be carried out from 15 days after emergence of the plants to keep the vector population at minimum and 5 to 6 sprays at 12 days interval might be needed to manage the disease.
