Assessment of Mustard Varieties/mutants for Their Susceptibility to Mustard Aphid in the Nethouse

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Ten mutants/varieties of mustard were evaluated in the laboratory as well as in the net house for their susceptibility to mustard aphid, Lipaphis erysimi (Kalt.) during the year 1993- 94. The mutants/ varieties were- Sampad, Agrani, Safal, SS-75, BS-5, Tori-7, Sangam, YS-52, BINA-2 and Nap-3. Assessments were made on the basis of duration life cycle of aphids on different varieties/mutants and drying of plants due to aphid infestation. The strain Nap-3 was found to be moderately susceptible and the varieties/mutants Safal and BINA-2 were found susceptible to aphids. The rest of the varieties/mutants were graded as highly susceptible.

Objectives:

To find out an aphid resistant variety.

Methodology:

The experiments were conducted in the nethouse to evaluate 10 varieties/mutants of mustard (B. campestris) against the mustard aphid (Lipaphis erysimi Kalt.). The varieties/mutants were : Sampad, Agrani, Safal, SS-75,BS-5, Tori-7, Sangam, YS-52, BINA-2 and Nap-3. The variety Tori-7 was used as the susceptible cheek. The details of the experimental methods are described below: The experiment was conducted in petridishes. The diameter of the petridishes were 15.0 em. Fresh, tender and uninfested leaves of each variety were collected from the field and brought to the laboratory and placed in petridishes. There were 3 replications for each variety. Then a single 8-days old adult aphid was released in every petridish and allowed to feed on them. The aphids were taken from a stock culture maintained in the laboratory. As the aphids reproduce partheno-genetically, they started giving birth to young nymphs one day after release. The nymphs were counted and the adult was removed to another petridish. The same procedure was followed every day. The nymphs became adult very quickly. The number of days required for the nymphs to become adult were recorded. Achievement/Findings:

The variety Nap-3 was found to be least affected by aphid infestation and had slight symptom of aphid injury. It is obvious from the results of the present studies that none of the varieties was found to be resistant to aphids. All the varieties under investigation were susceptible to aphids. However, there was variation among different varieties on the level of their susceptibility to aphids. The variety Nap-3 was least affected by aphid; the life cycle of aphid was longest in this variety.
