Rearing Performances of Eri-silkworm, Philosamia Ricini Hutt. ( Lepidoptera : Saturniidae) on Five Different Host Plants

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Effect of different host plants like castor, champa, cassava, sweet potato and papaya on the rearing performances of eri-silkworm, Philosamia ricini Hutt. was studied. Better rearing performances were observed on castor while champa and cassava showed no significant differences between them. Eri-silkworm could not survive on sweet potato and papaya.

To select a suitable host for better rearing .of eri silkworm, as quality of food, generally affects the economic productions

Methodology:

Five different host plants viz. castor Ricinus communia), champa (Piumerlw acutifolia ), cassava ( Manihot utilissima ) potato ( Ipomea batata ) and papaya ( Carica papaya) were used to study their effect on the rearing performances of eri-sillkworm. Just after hatching of eggs, 50 numbers of first instar larvae were randomly selected for each treatment and reared up to adult emergence in the tray (.5x.1x.05 m³). To maintain uniformity, each treatment was provided with four feeding a day at equal intervals of six hours, at the rate 10 g, 14 g, 19 g, 25 g and' 32 g to the first, second, third, fourth and final larval instars respectively. There were three replications in each treatment and each replication comprised the mean of 15 individuals except larval mortality total through which was considered by counting dead larvae throughout its larval period

Achievement/Findings:

The results also revealed that significantly higher larval, pupal and cocoon characters were observed on castor followed by champa and eassava.Though champa gives apparently better rearing performances from cassava, but there is no significant difference be tween them. This may be due to that castor plants constitute better growth as well as silk promoting nutritive elements than champa and cassava. Thus, it is evident that better growth as well as maximum silk can be obtained from eri-silkworm by using castor as food other than champa, cassva, sweet potato and papaya
