The project was taken to select a monitoring based effective brown planthopper (BPH) management technology for Sirajganj- a known BPH prone area in Bangladesh. Tarash upazilla under Sirajganj district was selected as the experimental site. For monitoring BPH, two methods were used in rice field and one in non-rice vegetation was tested.  In rice field light traps and yellow sticky trap was used while in non-rice vegetation a piece of white cloth to attract BPH was used. The component technologies validated at project site resulted that insecticide application with double nozzle sprayer increased yield up to 14.76% over the untreated control. The use of single nozzle sprayer increased the yield up to 5.87% only. Research managed plots gave up to 11.47% higher than the farmers managed plots.  The higher yield was due to a better coverage of insecticide application by double nozzle which effectively controlled planthoppers. A benchmark survey was conducted to estimate the farmers perception about the pest and its management. To improve farmers perception a series of training programme were conducted at different unions of Tarash upazilla based on benchmark survey. In total 209 farmers and 342 SAAO, SAPPO, pesticide dealer and College students were trained in 16 training programmes on different dates. A final impact study of project was conducted by an independent professional Agricultural Economist. It was revealed from the study that the farmers adopting the selected technology got 5.93% higher economic benefit than their usual management practice. Ninety six percent farmers reported that the selected technology is an effective solution for BPH management.

  1. To select a suitable package of management technologies for BPH control in HYV Boro rice.
  2. To popularize adoption of improved management practices among the participating farmers for controlling BPH in rice.
  3. To improve knowledge and skill of the participating farmers on BPH control in rice.

Five villages named Humkuria, Dobila, Ghargram, Washin and Kanchenswar under the project area of Tarash upazilla at Sirajganj district were selected for the socio-economic impact study. Three categories of farmers were recognized in those villages such as target farmers, trained farmers and non-trained farmers. Target farmers could also be termed as participating farmers. Participating farmers/target farmers are those farmers who are trained and whose fields were used for the project activities. Trained farmers are those who got training, but did not have any connection with the project activities while non trained farmers are those who neither got training nor had any connection with the project activities. A total of 850 farmers (170 from each village) were selected randomly from which representative farmers were finally selected. Representative farmers were selected by stratified technique from target farmers, trained farmers and non-trained farmers for detailed survey. Total number of sample (i.e, representative) farmers was 170 for the study taken, 20% from each of the above category. Among the selected samples, 16 were target farmers, 54 Trained and 100 were non-trained farmers.  The total representative samples were then divided into three groups such as small (97 samples), medium (50) and large (23) according to the farm size. Survey was done during November 2013 to January, 2014.  Data at farm level was collected by interviewing the sample farmers through structured questionnaire. Questionnaires were pre-tested and finalized before collecting data. Descriptive statistics were followed for analyzing the data. In addition, partial budgeting analysis was done to find out the economic benefits of double nozzle.

Popularization of the selected technology i.e., the use of double nozzle sprayer to the farmers of the project area and other BPH prone areas of Bangladesh is expected to increase the rice yield by 5% which may contribute a lot to the national rice yield.

  • Farmers will be able to determine appropriate time to control BPH
  • Frequency of pesticide application will be reduced
  • Hopper burn situation can be avoided
  • Farmers will get an yield advantage by the selected technology

The double nozzle sprayer does not need any extra cost in comparison to the single nozzle sprayer. Only the nozzle unit of the of the sprayer is to changed i.e., the double nozzle unit will replace the single nozzle unit of the sprayer. Applying pesticide by double nozzle sprayer will reduce application frequency and hence reduce pest control cost. Reducing pesticide application frequency will also reduce the risk of health hazards due to pesticide use.
