Optimization of Nitrogen Inputs for Mustard ( B. Juncea ) Variety : Shambal

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Effects of rate and time of nitrogen application on muatard cv. Shambal ware studied In a field trial at Bangladesh Agricultural University's Farm in 1990-91. Five nitrogen rates (0. 50, 100, 150 and 200 kgN/ha) were examined with four nitrogen timings (single application plus combinations of splitting until end flowering). Nitrogen rate progressively and significantly increased seed yield up to its highest level. Seed yield was doubled by 100 kgN/ha compared to the control (0.73t/ha), this was 234% at the 200 kg N/ha. The rate of increase was linear up to.54 kg N/ha and thereafter, the principle of law of diminishing return acted but nitrogen application up to its highest level was found profitable. Bene fits of seed yield due to higher nitrogen supply were accrued mainly from increases in both 1000-seed weight and pod number/m², the latter was found to be a strong determinant to seed nitrogen and seed oil content with respect to nitrogen rate but this had no extra effect on oil yield. Nitrogen timing had no significant. Influence on yield, yield components except reducing seed oil content and hence, increasing seed nitrogen.

Objectives:

To optimize the rate and time of nitrogen application in a HYV mustard cv. Sambal

Methodology:

Mustard cv. Shambal (Rahman, 1986), a self- compatible mutant variety of Brassica juncea, with tall plant type was selected for the study. Seeds were sown on 24 October 1990 in a high land of Bangladesh Agricultural University's farm, Mymensingh. Eight kq seed/ha was used in 25 em rows. Pre sowing soil analysis indicated that the soil was of medium fertility and therefore, a medium level of each of P-, K-. S- and Zn- fertilizers was applied during final rand preparation (BARC, 1989). In this experiment. rate of nitrogen applicaton was compared with different nitrogen timing. There were five nitrogen levels, ranging from 0 to 200 kgN/ha in increments of 50 kg and each lever had the following time of application : i) the whole of N applied at emergence (E). ii) 1/2 of the N applied at emergence + the balance at the start of flowering (E +SF1), iii) 1/3 of the N at emergence + the balance at start of flowering ( E + SF2 ), and iv) 1/3 of the N at emergence + 1 /3 at the start at flowering + the balance at the end of flowering ( E -r SF + EF). The factorally combined experiment with 20 treatments was replicated four times within a randomized block design. Each treatment plot measured 8 mx 2.5m. The crop was irrigated on 2 November and 10 December 1999. Two insecticidal sprays were required with Zithiol 57 E. C. @ 454 ml/ha, one at pre-flowering and other end flowering stages. Three times weeding ware done to keep the crop weed free until flowering. Yield components were determined from 10 selected plants obtained from 3 measured quadrats of each plot (Islam, 1987). At maturity, the whole plots were harvested to record seed yields on 9% moisture basis. Data were analyzed statistically and means were presented with standard errors.

Achievement/Findings:

The results indicated that only nitrogen rate of the treatments did produce major influence on both seed yield and yield components. There was no interaction found between the rate and time of nitrogen application. Results of the present experiment established that mustard cv. Samba! strongly responded to increased rate of nitrogen application and a rate 200 kg/ha was found optimum for the soil under consideration. Splitting of nitro gen in terms of delaying the same did not produce any bearing on seed yield. rather it did reduces oil content.
