Effect of Water Absorption on Compressive Strength of Stabilised Soil Block

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In this study the cured test specimens were immersed in water both fully and partially to observe the effect of absorption and water uptake respectively on the compressive strength. It has been found that water absorption in stabilized soil block can be as high as 16% by weight for compact ion pressures down to 4 MN/m² . It is suggested that the wet strength of stabilized soil block which is found to be around 1/3rd of dry strength, should be considered as design parameter for stabilized Soil block.

Objectives:

To find out the behavior of strength of cement stabilized soil block from dry to immersed conditions.

Methodology:

This investigation has been carried out by two methods. One is by complete immersion of the specimen in water following section 32.6 of B.S. 3921 o BSI, 1974. In this method, the cured test specimens were first dried to constant mass in a ventilated oven at 105°C to 110°C. for 48 hours. Each specimen was then weighed to the nearest 0 01 gm after cooling in a desiccator at an ambient temperature of 20 + 1⁰C in the laboratory. In the total immersion method the dry specimens are completely immersed, with out preliminary partial immersion, in water at room temperature. After immersion for 24 ±1 hour, the specimens were removed, wiped and weigh. In the second method the specimen was put in a constant 3 mm depth of water. A shallow pan was used having dimensions of 600mm x 600mm to observe the water uptake that would hold water to at least 25mm deep and was large enough to hold several blocks at once ( Dad, 1985 }. Water was supplied continuously to the pan and an outlet ensures a constant depth of water . At different specified intervals two specimens were removed at a time and their weight and compressive strength recorded. The absorption results are reported in terms of percentage increase In mass based on the dry specimen and are calculated to the nearest 0.1%. absorption results are observed.

In conclusion it my be said that in all cases it will be better to use a soil which has a low value of water absorption.
