Studies on the Food and Feeding Habits of Mola Amblypharyngodon Mola

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Results of studies conducted for 12 months on the food and feeding of 120 fish with respect to types and amount of food taken by the fish and its seasonal patterns of feeding are presented. The fish was found to be an omnivore with higher feeding preference for debris and plant foods. The animal foods were taken by the fish in a very small amount. The fish showed seasonal variations in its feeding activity. Maximum feeding activity was recorded during summer and minimum during winter. The fish was found to feed greater amount of phyto plankton and debris during summer and animal foods during winter months.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The fish sample for this study were collected from a Lake inside the Bang ladesh Agricultural University campus, Mymensingh, with the help of cast net having 12 mm mesh aize. The fish were sampled once in every month, starting from January 1983 and ending on December 1984. The stomach contents of fish were analysed by the methods following Miah eta!. (1984) and Dewan et a/. (1984). lndentlfica ion of different food organisms were made with the help of Pennak (1953), Ward and Whipple (1959) and Pres cott (1969).

Achievement/Findings:

The fish were found to feed on a wide variety of food groups such as Cyanopoyceae, Chlorophyceae, Bacillariophyceae, rotifera, Copepoda, Cladocera, debris, insects and a quatic higher plants. Among the different food groups debris was found to be themost domin ant food group and Chlorophyceae was the second most important food group by percentage of total points. Next to Chlorophyceae, Bacillariophyceae and aquatic higher plants ocaupied the suc cessive position in respect of percen tage of total points.
