Surge versus continuous irrigation was experimented with three manual pumps, namely; No. 6 Hand pump, Row r pump and Treadle pump, r11presenting three discharge rates in a silty loam..soil with four methods of application in two different moisture levels of the top 60 em soil. Equal quantity of water was applied to each furrow, containing one treatment. The results reveal no advantage of surging over continuous flow In terms of maximum reach and advance rate ; Rather, continuous application was found to be the best though not significantly ( at 5% level ) better then 12 X 12 cycles. The descending order of effective­ ness was;Continuous, 12 X 12, 8 X 8 and 4 X 4 cycles of on and off .

  To study   the effect   of surgeflow   application of   water   by   three  manul pumps in the furrow method irrigation.

The experiment was designed in in split-plot technique and conducted in a silt y loam soil of Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jessore of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Insti­tute during February-July, 1989. Three manual pumps ( No. 6 Hand pump, Rower pump and Treadle pump ) were used as main treatments and four methods of application as sub-treat­ments. In all treatments, the volume of 'water applied was kept equal. The methods were as follows : a) Continuous application, ( Continuous) b) 4 min. on & 4 min. off cycles, ( 4 X 4) c) 8 min. on & 8 min. off cycles, l 8 X 8) d) 12 min. on & 12 min. off cycles ( 12 X 12).
