Shading Effect on Dry Matter Partitioning, Yield and Yield Attributes of Mungbean and Blackgram

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Effect of shading on the growth and productivity of mungbean and blackgram was evaluated at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University. Plants were grown in pots and four different shade treatments were imposed by transferring the plants to a specially constructed vinyl house. Reduction of sun light by 25-50% dramatically increased leaf area in both mungbean and blackgram. Total dry matter was reduced by 37% and 50% for mungbean and blackgram, respectively in 75% shaded condition. In mungbean, control (100% irradiance) and 25% shaded plants produced identical grain yield and the intensities lower than 75% irradiance reduced yield. Conversely, blackgram yield was reduced only at severe shading (25% irradiance).

Objectives:

To evaluate the effect of shading on the dry matter partitioning, yield and yield attributes of mungbean and blackgram.

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Salna, Gazipur, Bangladesh during summer, 1993. Mungbean cultivar 'Kanti' and blackgram cultivar 'Barimash' were used as experimental materials. Both species were sown in 12 liter pots filled with 60 percent soil mixed with 40 percent decomposed cow dung. Fertilizer was incorporated into the soil at 0.213 g urea, 0.440 g triple super phosphate and 0.250 g muriate of potash per pot. Half of urea and the whole amount of other fertilizers were applied as basal dose. Remaining half of urea was applied at flowering stage. Four sprouted seeds were planted in each pot on March 6, 1993. Seedlings emerged in two days. Thinning was done at first trifoliate leaf stage to retain single plant in each pot. Plants were watered regularly and kept weed free by frequent hand weedings. Insecticide was applied to keep the insect infestation to a minimum. The plants were grown under natural condition up to 21 days after emergence (DAE) corresponding to the 3-node stage. Some of the mungbean and blackgram plants were infected by Yellow Mosaic Virus and excluded from the experiment. When the plants attained 3-node stage, the plants were transferred to vinyl house specially constructed for the experiment and subjected to four variable light intensities viz, 100% (control), 75% , 50% and 25%. The variable light regimes were created by placing nets over the crop. Dry weights of stem, branch, petiole, reproductive organs, leaves, seed, pod wall and total dry weight were taken. Leaf thickness was measured using a digital Slide Calipers and leaf area per plant for each treatment was measured using a leaf area meter. Mungbean and blackgram being indeterminate in type, pods developed and matured over a period of time and hence harvested in three pluckings. Pods of individual plant of various treatments were harvested separately. Five plants were harvested at maturity for each treatment of mungbean and blackgram. The final plant harvest was done at 63 DAE for mungbean and 66 DAE for blackgram and yield and morphological characters were recorded. Data on yield and yield contributing characters were subjected to statistical analysis. Means were compared following Least Significant Difference (LSD) test.

Achievement/Findings:

Results obtained in this experiment indicate that shading affected growth, dry matter accumulation and its partitioning into components, yield and yield attributes of mungbean and blackgram. A moderate shading resulted in increased leaf area and greater TDM that eventually gave statistically similar grain yield compared to control plants.
