Study on Germination and Its Subsequent Effect on the Yield of Wheat

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was designed to find out an yield range combined with the problems during rabi season, 1992-93 at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jamalpur. Higher germination percent was recorded at early stages of emerging seedlings ie., at 10 days after sowing (52.35) and start p reducing during subsequently longer period of emergence. The lower germination in the longer emergence period might be due to damage of seeds/seedlings due to attack of birds arid insects and exposure to sunlight causes desiccation resulted to significantly lower plant stand per unit area. In this situation, where plant density were significantly reduced wider spacing enabled the plants to recover and produce an extensive but effective leaf area which led to higher photosynthetic rate then eventually resulted the higher seed yield. Similarly, on the other hand, although higher germination was found at 10 days after sowing (52.35), the higher number of seedlings reduced the effective leaf area for photosynthesis due to common shading and induced plant competition for nutrients and water. This condition had resulted in the overall reduction of net assimilation rate and also resulted to yield reduction.

Objectives:

To find out an yield range combined with the problems during rabi season

Methodology:

The experiment consists of 6 (six) treatments for counting of germinating seedlings at different days after sowing and their consequent relations with number of seedlings/m² , number of spikes/m² and grain yield/ha were arranged by counting germinating seedlings at 10,17,24,31, 38 and 45 days after sowing. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. All the treatments were fertilized with 100-60- 40 kg/ha of N, P ₂0₅, k₂0, respectively and the entire amount of fertilizers were applied as basal. The variety Kanchan was broadcasted on December 1, 1992 and finally the crop was harvested on March 18, 1993. The desired agronomic data were recorded, ana!ysed and means were separated as per DMRT.
