Response of Soybean (glycine Max) to Irrigation at Different Growth Stages

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jamalpur with irrigation on soybean (Glycine max) of variety Shohag (PB-l) at different growth stages during the Rabi season in 1995-96 and 1996-97. No significant effect of irrigation on yield and yield attributes of soybean was observed. However, relatively better yield was found in the treatment having one irrigation at vegetative stage. Least water use but highest water use efficiency was found with no irrigation followed by one irrigation at vegetative stage. Soybean may not require irrigation under the soils and climatic condition of the Jamalpur where ground water table prevails close (1.5 m) to the crop root zone. However, in areas of deep ground water table during the crop period, one irrigation at vegetative or budding stage may be used for good yield.

Objectives:

a) Find the critical stage(s) of growth to irrigation; b) Determine irrigation requirement of soybean ; c) Observe effect of irrigation on soybean under the soil and climatic condition of the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jamalpur.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted during Rabi season in 1995-96 and 1996-97 at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jamalpur located at 24º56´11" N latutude and 89º 55´ 54" E longitude and at an elevation of 8 metre above mean sea level. The soil of the experimental site was mixed grey and brown floodplain with dark grey ped coatings of Kendua silt loam series of the Old Brahmaputra Floodplain. The soil physical properties of the experimental site were as presented. Soil moistures at sowing were as in Figures la and lb. Rainfall for the study period was as presented in Figures 2a and 2b. treatments and three replications. Soybean (Glycine max) of variety Sohag (PB-I) was used as the test material. The plot size was 9.0 sq.m. Row to row distance was 30 cm and fertilizers at the rate of 65, 135, 35, 115 and 14 kg per hectare from urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and zinc sulphate, respectively were used. The all fertilizers were applied as basal during final land preparation before sowing. The date of sowing was December 20 and 11 for the first and second year, respectively. Soil moisture was measured by conventional oven dry method at sowing, before each irrigation and at harvest. Soil samples for moisture measurement were taken at an increment of 30 cm for 90 cm Irrigation was applied at scheduled growth stage(s) as per treatment. At each irrigation, measured amount of water was applied, required to bring the soil moisture status of the soil profile to field capacity level, by hosepipe fitted with a volumetric water meter. where I,R,D and SMD represent the irrigation, rainfall, drainage and soil moisture deficit, respectively during the crop growing period; all are in units of depth. Yield from whole plot and yield contributing characters from ten randomly selected plants of each plot were recorded to explain the results.

Growing soybean may not require irrigation under the soils and climatic condition of the Jamalpur where ground water table prevails close to the crop root zone. However, in areas of deep ground water table (from where water would not be available to crops which varies from soil to soil) during the crop growing period, one irrigation at vegetative or budding stage may be used for good yield of soybean.
