Genetic Variability, Heritability and Genetic Advance in Hibiscus Sabdariffa L.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance for 12 characters in 64 accessions of Mesta (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) were studied. Highly significant difference among the accessions were observed for plant height, base diameter, number of branches, weight of bark, fibre weight, stick weight, days to bud, days to flower, number of fruits, weight of fruits, weight of calyx and seed weight. A number of accessions were significantly superior to the standard variety for each of the characters studied. High heritability coupled with high genetic advance was observed for number of fruits, weight of fruits, number of branches, weight of calyx, seed weight, fibre weight and stick weight. Non- additive gene effect was indicated for plant height, base diameter. days to bud and days to flower. Both additive and non-additive gene effects were suggested for weight of bark.

Objectives:

To estimate the genetic variability, co- efficient of variation, heritability and genetic advance to help select superior genotypes from among the 64 accessions of mesta.

Methodology:

The present study was conducted with 64 accessions comprising 55 indigenous, eight introduced and one released variety. The crop was raised in a balanced lattice design, 8 x 8 with nine replications. The inter and intra row spacing was 30 cm and 6- 8 cm, respectively. The seeds were sown on April 28, 1989. The data were recorded on ten randomly selected plants from each row for the following characters and the values were expressed per plant basis: Plant height, base diameter, number of branches, weight of bark, fibre weight, stick weight, days to bud, days to flower, number of fruits, weight of fruits, weight of calyx and seed weight. Analysis of variance was computed following Gomez and Gomez (1976). Phenotypic, genotypic and environmental co- efficient of variation were calculated by the formula suggested by Burton and Devance (1953). Heritability in broad sense was calculated as per Lush (1949). The expected genetic advance was estimated by the formula suggested by Miller et al. (1958).
