Yield and Yield Components of Wheat as Influenced by Growth Hormone Applied at Different Growth Stages

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The yield and yield components of a modern cultivar of wheat "Kanchan" was studied at the Agronomy Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural Univer sity, Mymensingh during November 1991 to March 1992 to see the effect of two plant growth hormones namely Indole acetic acid and Gibberelic acid applied at three different growth stages such as, crown root, tillering and grain filling stages along with a control. Gibberelic acid significantly increased the number of effective tillers/plant, number of filled grains /spike and straw yield. Application of growth hormones at the tillering stage produced the highest grain yield. The interaction of growth hormones and stage of application exhibit significant influence on plant height and straw yield.

Objectives:

To examine the yield and yield components of a modern wheat cultivar "Kanchan" as influenced by the application of growth hormone at different growth stages.

Methodology:

A field experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during November 1992 to March 1993. The soil of the experimental area belongs to the Old Brahmaputra Flood plain (AEZ9 ) . A modern variety of wheat "Kanchan" was grown as experimental crop. The experiment was laid out in a split plot design with growth hormone in the main plot and stage of application in the unit plot of 5m x 4m. Each treatment was replicated three times. The following two sets of treatments were included in the experiment. A .a) Gibberelic Acid b) Indole Acetic Acid, B. Stages of application:a) Control (No hormone), b) Crown root stage,c) Tillering stage,d) Grain filling stage. The N, P and K fertilizers were applied at the rates of 140 kg, 75 kg and 50 kg through urea, triple superphosphate and muriate of potash per hectare, respectively . The full dose of TSP and MP and one third of urea were applied at final land preparation. The remaining two-third of urea was applied into two equal splits at 30 and 60 days after sowing. The seeds were sown continuously by hand on 20 November, 1991 in 2 5 cm apart rows at the rate of 120 kg /ha . Weeding was done twice by hand on 20 and 45 days after sowing. One irrigation w as applied at crown root stage on 15th December after 26 days of sowing. Gibberelic acid at the rate of 25 mg in 10 litres of water and Indole acetic acid at the rate of 2. 5g in 1 0 litres of water were applied at crown root and tillering stages after 20 & 35 days of sowing, respectively . Again Gibberelic acid at the rate of 500 mg in 10 litres of water and Indole acetic acid at the rate of 5g in 10 litres of water were applied at grain filling stage after 7 5 days of sowing. Harvesting was done on 28 February 1 992. Data were recorded at harvest on plant height, productive tillers/m² , filled grains / spike, weight of 1000 grains, and grain and straw yield.
