Relative Importance of Bank Loan and Cooperative Loan in Selected Areas of Mymensingh District

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This paper examines the importance of cooperative and bank loan to both the members and non-members of cooperative societies. The amount of bank loan received per member was higher than that of cooperative loan but the recovery performance of the cooperative loan was better. About 89% of the small farmers favored bank loan while 51% medium and 57% large farmers preferred cooperative loan. Seventy five per cent non -members of the society preferred bank loan and the rest favored cooperative loan. The functions of the societies were not satisfactory and limited with the introduction of SACP. People's reluctance to cooperative society was evident.

Objectives:

To analyze the relative importance of Bank loan and Cooperative loan under SACP.

Methodology:

Five BRDB societies were selected purposively from three Upazilas of Mymensingh district for this study, The selected societies were Madhya Dapunia Krishak Samabaya Samity, Ajmatpur Krishak Samabaya Samlty and Bhati Barara Krishak Samabaya Samity of Sadar Upazila, Bailor Krishak Sama baya Samit v of Trishal Upazila and Jshwargram Krishak Samabya Samity from Muktagacha Upazila.Simple random sa mpling technique was followed to select 55 respondents from 240 members of the 5 societies. In addition to this , 20 farmers wer e selected as non-members of the cooperatives but they borrowed from banks.Thus the total sample was 75.
