An investigation was carried out at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during April to August 1995 for studying the feasibility of accommodating summer mungbean with Aus rice with a view to raising organic matter status of soil without hampering the rice yield. Seventeen treatments which included eight intercropped and nine monoculture treatments were used in this experiment. The highest grain yield was obtained from Aus sole (T1) followed by Aus rice intercropped with mungbean spaced 50 cm and sown at 30 days after sowing of Aus rice (T17) with the highest LER values. Aus rice intercropped with mungbean at 25 cm and 50 cm apart rows sown at 30 days after sowing of Aus rice produced the highest rice equivalent yield. Organic matter status of the experimental soil was also raised due to intercropping of mungbean in Aus rice.

To observe the feasibility of intercropping of mungbean with Aus rice for the purpose of raising organic matter status of soil and at the time maintaining usual rice yield, if not improved.

Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during April to August 1995. The experiment was laid out with the following] 7 treatments in a RCB design with three replications: T1: Aus rice (sale), T2 : Mungbean (sale) at 25 cm spacing sown concurrently with Aus rice (D1M1S25), T3 : Mungbean (sale) at 50 cm spacing sown concurrently with Aus rice (D1MsS50), T4 : Aus rice-- Mungbean at 25 cm spacing sown concurrently with Aus rice (D1M1S25), T5 : Aus rice+ Mungbean at 50 cm spacing sown concurrently with Aus rice (D1M1S50), T6 : Mungbean (sale) at 25 cm spacing sown 10 DAS of Aus rice (D1M1S25), T7 : Mungbean (sale) at 50 cm spacing sown 10 DAS of Aus rice (D1M1S50),  T8 : Aus rice+ Mungbean at 25 cm spacing sown 10 DAS of Aus rice (D1M1S25), T9, : Aus rice-- Mungbean at 50 cm spacing sown 10 DAS of Aus rice (D1M1S50), T10 : Mungbean (sale) at 25 cm spacing sown 20 DAS of Aus rice (D1M1S25), T11 : Mungbean (sale) at 50 cm spacing sown 20 DAS of Aus rice (D1M1S50), T12 : Aus rice+ Mungbean at 25 cm spacing sown 20 DAS of Aus rice (D1M1S25), T13 : Aus rice+ Mungbean at 50 cm spacing sown 20 DAS of Aus rice (D1M1S50), T14 : Mungbean (sale) at 25 cm spacing sown 30 DAS of Aus rice(D1M1S25), T15: Mungbean (sale) at 50 cm spacing sown 30 DAS of Aus rice (D1M1S50), T16 : Aus rice+ Mungbean at 25 cm spacing sown 30 DAS of Aus rice (D1M1S25), T17 : Aus rice+ Mungbean at 50 cm spacing sown 30 DAS of Aus rice (D1M1S50). Yield data were collected from randomly selected 20 plants of each crop in every plot and analyzed statistically. Rice equivalent yield (REY) and land equivalent ratio (LER) were calculated as per Anjaneyula et al. (1982) and Willey (1979) respectively. Gross return was estimated in a hectare basis taking in to account the local market price of products and byproducts of rice and mungbean. Soil samples were collected from the experimental field, one before land opening and the other after final harvest of crops. The total nitrogen was estimated by Micro- kjeldahl method and organic carbon by auto oxidation method according to Black (1965). The organic matter was calculated by multiplying the % organic carbon with the conventional "Van Bemmelen Factor" of 1.73.

Aus rice intercropped with mungbean at 25 cm spacing of mungbean i.e. single row of Aus rice with single row of mungbean was better in respect of LER, REY and gross return over sale rice culture. In addition, it increased % total N, % organic carbon and % organic matter content of the soil i.e. soil fertility status. Therefore, mungbean can be grown as an intercrop with Aus rice without any appreciable yield reduction of rice. Moreover, this system will improve the fertility status of the soil.
