Feasibility of Using Marine Catfish, Tachysurus Thalassinus Pituitary in Breeding Indian Major Carps, Labeo Rohita and Cirrhinus Mrigala

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Shortage of carp pituitary for breeding Indian major carps is becoming an important constraint for increasing hatchery production of carp seeds. The present study, undertaken to observe the feasibility of using marine catfish, Tachysurus thalassinus pituitary in breeding Labeo rohita and Cirrhinus mrigsls, revealed that a low dose of 6 mg/kg of female fish, ovulation could be successfully induced in mrigal. In rohu, a higher dose of 12 mg/kg was required to induce spawning.

Objectives:

To observe the feasibility of using marine catfish, Tachysurus thalassinus pituitary in breeding

Methodology:

The study was conducted during the month of May when the fish were found well mature. The pituitary glands used in the study were collected two months ago from the marine catfish, T. thalassinus caught from the Bay of Bengal by Mechanized boats and preserved in ice for 3-4 days. The glands were collected from specimens ranging in weight from 3.0 to 7.0 kg and were preserved in acetone and stored in a refrigerator . Two-to four-year old rohu (L. rohita) and mrigal (C. mrigala) weighing 1.75- 2: 50 and 0.9 - 3. 20 kg respectively were used in the study. Marine catfish pituitary at dosages of 8, 1 0 and 12 mg/kg of female fish were tried in rohu and 6, 8 and 1 0 mg/kg in mrigal. The total dosages were splitted into two with an interval of 6 hours. Two females were injected with for each dose. Carp pituitary at dose of 2 mg/kg body weight was used for males. Pituitary glands preserved in acetone were air dried on blotting paper for 1 5 minutes before weighing. Injected fish were manually stripped about 6 hours after second injection. Eggs of individual females were kept separately in jar incubators where the water exchange rate was 30 1 /m and temperature 26.0 to 27.5.
