Studies on the Nature and Extent of Damage Done by Red Flour Beetle, Tr/bolium Cast Aneum ( Herbst )( Coleoptera. Tenebrionidae ) on Stored Wheat and It3 Natural Enemies

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The extent of damage caused by the Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) larvae and the adults was studied. The percentage of damage caused by the larvae from emergence to the formations of pupae was 4.9. The damage caused by the adult beetle during the period of 7, 15 and 30 days of infestation was 0.78, 1.4 and 2.3 per cent respectively. Natural enemies-mites were found to feed on the eggs ofT. castaneum. The larvae caused more damage to wheat grains than the adult beetles.

Objectives:

To examine the extent of damage done by the larvae and adufts and also to observe its natural enemies

Methodology:

In the laboratory of Entomology department of Bangladesh Agricultural' University, Mymensingh the studies ware conducted on damage done by T. castaneum and its natural enemies. Ten pairs of Petri dishes each containing 2.5 g of wheat grains and 10 newly emerged larvae of the past were released in each Petri dish. Soma of the grains were broken to encourage the young larvae to feed on them easily. One more Petri dish of same size together with the same quantity of fresh wheat grains without larvae were kept as control in order to get the actual damage by the larvae. The larvae were allowed to feed on wheat tllr the formation of pupae. The damaged wheat grain was weighed again. The amount of loss was calculated by deducting the weight of damage wheat grain with that of control.

Achievement/Findings:

Both the adult and larvae are found to be destructive to wheat grain. There are altogether nine instars found during their developmental period. All the lnstars were not equally destructive. Just after hatching, the young larvae moved for ward in search of food. The first in star larvae having their mandibles not so much hard preferred embryonic par-tion of the grains. Sometimes the lar va entered inside the grain through the germ portion and feed on it but it did not remain for a longer period ( Bekon, and Lessard, 1988). At the later stages of the development, the larva fed on the en tire endosperm of wheat grain leaving only the outer coating. The larvae at fifth, sixth and seventh instar stage were most destructive.
