Influence of Dietary Sources on the Tolerance Level of H. Armigera (hubner) and H. Pu.nctjgera Wallen Gren to Endosulfan

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The influence of ten different food sources on the levels of tolerance to endosulfan in Heliothis armigera and H. punctigera was studied. Tolerance level varied greatly in the larvae of both the Insect species but the pattern was similar in both species with respect to lab. and field strains. and the larvae fed on intact end excised leaves. H. armigera w as more tolerant than H. Punctigera. The field strain was more tolerant than the lab. strain.but not significant. The larval age variations at 35±5 mg body weight on some food sources did not have any effect on tolerance. Tobacco seemed to be the best inducer of endosuifan tolera nce in H. armigera, followed by mint.

Objectives:

Methodology:

Rearing of test insects : Larvae of Heliothis armigera and Heliothis pun ctigera ware collected from cotton and lucerne at Gatton, Queensland and maintained separately in an environmentally controlled room at 27 ±1^oc and 75 ±5% relative humidity with 14 hr. photophase technique of Spodopcera litura (F.) (Ahmed and Hooper, 1979) except that each larva from second instar onward was kept separately in individual small cups to avoid the cannibalistic habit of the test species. Temperature and humidity were checked by a thermohygrograph. The first generation which came from field collected larvae of both the species was considered as field strain and the larvae from fourth generation onward were considered as lab. strain. lnsecticide tests were conducted on both lab. and field strain!i of both the lucerne ( Hunter river), corn, potato (Sebago) were sown in pots of 25 cm diameter. Each of the pots contained steam sterilized equal volume of sand and peatmoss mixed with Ca 8 kg soil by a cement mixture. The contents o' each of the pots were fertilized with 31 g mixture of commercial grads of dolomite, super-phosphate, gypsum, blood/bone, sulphate of potash and potassium nitrate in the ratio of 3 : 1 ; 1 ; 1 : 0.1 : 0.1. Eight seedlings of the same kind p€r pot were allowed to grow. Leaves were not fed to larvae until the plants were 5.5 to 7 weeks old. Larvae were also fed on an artificial diet (Shorey and Hale, 1965 ) for insecticidal test. The pots containing the infested plants and the plastic cups with infested excised leaves or artificial diet were arranged randomly in the glasshouse. Be-tween 09.00 and 10.00 h. leaves of the host plants grown in the glasshouse were collected in plastic bags and kept in sealed plastic boxes to minimize evaporation.

Achievement/Findings:

The lab. strain was reared on an artificial diet in an environmentally controlled room for generations together and the field strain was always the progeny of the field collected parents whose food sources wer e open. Moreover, It is an established fact that the parental nutritional sources have tremendous effects on the progeny of the insect, particularly in lepidopteran species.
