Effect of Body Weight on the Physical Characteristics of the Kidney of Black Bengal Goat(capra Hircus)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted to determine the relationship among some of the quantitative traits of the kidney of black bengal goats (Capra hircus). The body weights were recorded and analysed for the experiment . No significant relationship was observed between the body weight and the weight of kidney. Individual characters did not vary significantly between the kidneys of male and female goats. Kidney parameters like length, width, thickness, volume of water replaced, percentage of kidney based on the body weight, number of pyramids, length of crest, thickness of cortex and medulla were seen to be significantly correlated with weight of kidney at different probability levels.

Objectives:

To determine the relationship among some of the quantitative traits of the kidney of black Bengal goats

Methodology:

Twenty clinically healthy adult black Bengal goat of both sexes and of non-descript breed, slaughtered at Bangladesh Agricultural University abattoir were used for the present study. Body weight of the animals were recorded in each occasion before slauthter. The kidneys were then removed carefully from the body, and the adipose and other tissue adhering to it were removed.Blometrical parameters viz. i) body weight (lb), ii) weight of each kidney (gm), iii) length of each kidney (em). iv) width of each kidney (cm). v) thickness of each kidney (cm), vi) volume of water replaced by each kidney (mi). vii) percentage of kidney based on body weight, viii) number of pyramids, ix) length of crest (em) and x) thickness of cortex and medulla (em) were collected and statistically analysed. Equal number of kidneys from male and female goat were taken for the experiment. Length, breadth and thickness of kidneys were measured at the longest, widest and thickest part respectively. Other parameters were measured following the traditional methods.

Achievement/Findings:

The mean body weight of male goats ranged from 13 .00 lb to 18.00 lb for the whole population whereas in case of female goat the weight varied from 14.00 lb to 17.00 lb. The weight of kidney of female goat was higher in comparison to the male.The average length, breadth and thickness of left kidneys were 4.40 cm, 2.82 em and 2.29 cm and for the right kidneys were 4.31 cm, 2. 61 cm and 2.41 cm, respectively. Kidney parameters like length, width, thickness, volume of water replaced, percentage of kidney based on the body weight, number of pyramids, length of crest, thickness of cortex and medulla were seen to be significantly correlated with weight of kidney at different probability levels.
