Occupation of the People and Their Participation in Irrigation Programmes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Occupation of the people and their participation in irrigation programmes was studied in Ullahpara thana of Sirajgonj district from 195 randomly selected individuals . Participation of the people in the irrigation programmes was classified under four levels, namely; no participation, low participation, medium participation and high participation. Analysis of data indicates that 66 percent of the respondents having agriculture as their main occupation with various levels of participation; 13 percent have no participation, 34 percent have low, 16 percent medium and only 3 percent have high participation. The study also revealed a significant effect of occupation on participation in the irrigation programmes. This was due to the fact that occupation of the people has an important bearing on their participation in the irrigation programmes .

Objectives:

To determine and describe the occupation of the people and their participation in irrigation programmes

Methodology:

The study area of this piece of research is Ullapara thana of Sirajgonj district. The thana is composed of 13 unions and 164 villages. Majority of the inhabitants maintain their livelihood from agriculture but there is much opportunity for business and fishing. A multi stage sampling procedure was followed for this study. The researcher collected the list of the unions and villages and selected 30 percent and 20 percent of the unions and villages respectively, at random. The household of the selected villages together with the names of family heads were also selected at random by using a Table of Random Number . Thus, the population of this study consisted of 1950 family heads and 10 % of them i.e. 195 people were selected randomly and data were collected from them by using an interview schedule. Recent studies on social participation of individuals have focused on the quantification of the phenomenon along a very general continuum indicating degrees of intensity of involvement in a group . Intensity is calculated from various manifestations of participation in the activities of the group . Membership, attendance in meetings, financial support and officership in formal organizations, are some of the more overt manifestations of social participation or opportunity for social interaction. These are counted, weighted and summed to produce participation scores that are descriptive of individuals. Thus, peoples' participation in irrigation programmes were measured by assigning weights for each question and statements on the basis of nature and extent of their participation by . considering the existing scope and prevailing situations. From the scaling procedure, the score for each respondent was obtained by summing 'up the responses to every item regarding participation in irrigation programmes of the study area. Occupation of the people: Occupation of the respondents were categorized into two, namely, main occupation and secondary occupation. Again these two categories were divided into agriculture, business, service and others.
