Comparative Adaptability and Biological Value of Quality Protein Maize (qpm) Cv. Nutricta

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Some growth parameters and yield components of QPM cv. Nutricta were studied to compare its adaptability in comparison to Barnali and Shuvra. The growth parameters of Nutricta was comparable to that of Barnali and superior than that of Shuvra. Number of ear per plant, number of rows per ear, number of grains per ear and 100- grain weight of Nutricta were statistically similar to that of Barnali. The nutritional quality of Nutricta were studied in guineapigs in comparison to Barnali and recommended diet (ICDDRB). The average consumption of Nutricta was higher than Barnali at 10 days after start of feeding but equal to recommended diet at 60 days after start of feeding. Consequently, when Nutricta was fed, the average increase in body weight of guineapigs at 10 days after start of feeding was higher than that of Barnali and similar to that of recommended diet even at 60 days after start of feeding. Thus the storage protein of Nutricta grown and adapted under Bangladesh condition was of high biological value.

Objectives:

To study the adaptation behaviour, such as agronomical parameters, nutritive quality and biological value of QPM cv. Nutricta in comparison to Barnali and Shuvra.

Methodology:

Two experiments were conducted, one at the experimental field of the Department of Crop Botany, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during January to May, 1992 and the other at the Animal House of the Department of Microbiology, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during July to September, 1993. Quality Protein Maize (QPM) cv. Nutricta, Barnali and Shuvra were used in the study. The experimental units were prepared following CRD with three replications. Fertilizers were applied at the rate of 60-120-60 kg/ha of N-P-K as basal in the form of Urea, TSP and MP respectively. The urea @ 60 kg/ha was applied as top dress in two equal splits. Plant height and number of leaves/plant were recorded at 20 days after germination and data collection were continued upto the ear initiation at 1 0 days interval. Data on number of grains per row, number of rows per ear, 100 grains weight (g) and grain yield (g/plant) were recorded at final harvest. Daily feed consumption and rate of increase in body weight of guineapig due to feeding of Nutrlcta. Barnali and balanced diet (ICDDRB recommended) were studied in this experiment. Twenty seven guineapigs of same age and sex were arranged into 9 groups. Each group was considered as one replication. Nutricta and Barnali grains were crusted into powder and pellets were made from them. The pellets of each of Nutricta, Barnali and recommended diet were given to three groups of guineapigs randomly. In addition to the main feeds Durba grass (Cynodon dactylon) were given to each group of animals in equal quantity and vitamin C was supplied at the rate of 0.02% of the supplied feeds. Daily feed consumption were recorded every day and increase in body weight of each animal was recorded at 10 days interval.
