Growth Response of Catfish,clarias Macrocephalus (gunther) Fry Fed on Diets with Variable Protein Levels

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A 35 day long growth trial was conducted with Clarias macrocephalus fry fed on diets containing three different protein levels o f 30, 35, and 40%. Each of the treatments had four replicates with a stocking density of 60 fry with a mean initial weight of 0.37 ± 0.1. g. Growth performance of fish measured in terms of length and weight gain and specific growth rate showed that fish fed on diet containing 40% dietary protein resulted in the highest (P <0.05) growth. The specific growth rate of fish fed the experimental diets varied between 2.48 and 3.16. The food conversion ratio (FCR) values for the experimental diets were fairly low ranging from 1.54 to 1.82. The diet containing 40 crude protein showed significantly the lowest value i.e. the best FCR . However, there was no significant differences (P>0.05) between the survival rates of fish fed experimental diets which ranged between 85.83 and 86.67%. The result of the present study indicated that diet of C. macrocephalus fry should contain 40% protein for optimal growth.

Objectives:

To observe the growth of catfish, Clarias macrocephalus fry fed on diets containing variable protein levels.

Methodology:

The experiment had three treatments containing three levels of protein i.e., 30, 35 and - 40% and the diets were termed 1, 2 & 3 respectively . Every treatment contained four replicates. Each of the buckets were stocked with 60 fry and the water volume was maintained at 25 l . A continuous aeration through aerator was provided for oxygen supply to the buckets. Aged tap water which had been kept for one week was used to refill the buckets. The plastic buckets were cleaned daily in the morning before first feeding by replacing half of the water with fresh clean water . A total scrubbing was carried out once in a week and three fourth of the water was changed at that time. A 7.7 cm diameter and 1 5.4 cm long PVC pipe was provided in each bucket as hiding place for fry after cutting the pipe longitudinally into two pieces. The selected feed ingredients were chemically analysed for their proximate composition. Proximate analyses were carried out according to the method followed by AOAC (1980). All the ingredients were finely ground to pass through 0.5 mm sieve. Diets were formulated to contain 30, 35 and 40% protein . Attempts were made to keep the energy levels more or less similpr. The feed were prepared by using a hand operated meat mincer. The feed were supplied thrice daily at 0900 h, 1300 h and 1700 hat the rate of 5% of fish body weight per day. Sampling was carried out at an interval of 7 days and length and weight measurement of 1 5 fingerlings were taken at random from each bucket. Total length (mm) of fingerlings were measured by using a measuring board and the weight of fishes were recorded by using an analytical balance (Model Gmbtt D-7470 Albstadt - 1). Mortality of fish (if any) were recorded early in each morning before feeding. Water quality parameters, such as temperature, dissolved oxygen and pH were monitored at weekly intervals except water temperature. Water temperature was measured by a mercury thermometer; oxygen and pH were measured by using a YSI MODEL 57 Oxygen meter and E520 (Metrohm Herisan) pH meter respectively .
