Relative Efficiency and Economics of Different Cultural Methops and Herbicides for Weed Control in Transplant Aus Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The investigations were conducted in transplant aus rice at Hajee Mohammad Danesh Agricultural College Farm, Dinajpur in the years of 1992 and 1993. A total of 13 different weed species have been recognized and among them, Panilong ( Polygonum persicaria L.) and Alighasa (Cyperus difformis L.) were the major infesting weeds in the fields. Twice hand weeding at 14 and 34 DAT resulted the highest weed control efficiency in both the y ears. Amongst the herbicidal treatments, ronstar 2.5 L!ha was the most effective and setoff 15 g/ha proved to be inferior to re s t of the treatments in controlling the infesting weeds. Although, both the highest grain yield o f 4.76 t /ha in 1992 and 4.87 t /ha in 1993 were obtained from twice hand weeding but application of ronstar @ 2.0 L/ha yielded the maximum additional returns of Tk. 5606 and Tk . 4654 per hectare over control (no weeding; no herbicide application) in 1992 and 1993, respectively.

Objectives:

To study the efficiency and economics of different cultural and herbicides for weed control in transplant aus rice.

Methodology:

Field experiments were carried out at Hajee Mohammad Danesh Agricultural College Farm, Dinajpur in transplant aus rice during 1992 and 1993. The experiment was laid out in randomized block design with three replications. The unit plot size was 5m x 4m. Twenty five days old seedlings of the variety 'BR 14 were transplanted at 2 5cm x 1 5cm spacing on 5th and 7th May in 1992 and 1993 respectively. The field was fertilized with 60 N, 45 P₂0₅and 25 K ₂0 kg /ha . The full amount of P₂0₅ and K ₂ 0 were applied one day before transplanting. The whole amount of N was top dressed in three splits, at 15, 30 and 45 days of transplanting. A set of ten treatments including a control (no weeding; no herbicide application) were constituted with hand weeding, hoeing by Japanese rotary rice weeder and two herbicides, viz. ronstar and setoff. However, the spray solution of each herbicide was maintained at 500 L/ha and sprayed after 6 days of transplanting. The recommended plant protection schedule was adopted to keep the crop free from pest and diseases. The crop was harvested on 8th and 10th August in 1992 and 1993 respectively. Weed population/m² was recorded with the help of a square meter quadrate from five randomly selected spots in each plot at 50 days of transplanting. Intensity of infestations of individual weed species was estimated following the method as suggested by Rahman et al., ( 1990). Weed control efficiency was worked out according to the following formula outlined by Sawant and Jadav (1985) . Weed control efficiency = (OWe-OWT/owe) x 100. At maturity, ten plants/plot were randomly selected for recording data on panicles/hill, grains/panicle and 1000-grain weight (g) . The grain yield (t/ha) was recorded as per treatments.
