BRRI recommended practices for insect pest management was validated during T. Aman 2013 in 4 farmers field at Pirganj and four in Taraganj of Rangpur district to  demonstrate BRRI recommended practices for successful management of rice insect pests. Yellow stemborer (YSB),  rice leaf roller (RLR), long horned cricket (LHC), grasshopper (GH), green leafhopper (GLH), brown planthopper (BPH) and white backed planthopper (WBPH) were found at Taraganj in fortnightly sweeping and hill counting. Among the natural enemies spider (SPD), ladybird beetle (LBB), dragon fly (Drag. fly), damsel fly (Dam. fly) and carabid beetle (CBB) were noticed both in Taraganj and Pirganj.  In 20 hill count study carabid beetle was not found in both the locations of Pirganj and Taraganj where continuously insecticide was used. Similarly, carabid beetle was not observed at Taraganj during sweeping in the same treated plot. Lowest natural enemies were observed both in Pirganj and Taraganj in T1 where insecticides used continuously. Spider and Dam. fly population found highest in treatment T3 in Pirganj. Again, LBB and Dam. fly found highest in T2 and spider in T3 in Taraganj during sweeping where no insecticide was applied. In T1, Carbofuran 5G@ 10.0 kg/ha was applied five times but no yield advantage was observed. In T2 & T3 only perching and sweeping were done fortnightly or when necessary without use any insecticide but no yield reduction was observed. Therefore, it was found that continuous use of insecticide had no effect on yield and yield contributing characters of rice when insect infestation below the ETL.

  • To demonstrate BRRI recommended practices for successful management of rice insect pests.

The experiment was conducted in farmer’s fields. Location and fields for the component treatments was selected based on land type, variety cultivated and transplanting time. A total of 44 decimal farmer’s field from which one portion of each farmer’s field was remained under the respective farmers’ supervision without any intervention treated as T4. The other portion was managed with three treatment combinations i.e., T1= Prophylactic use of insecticide, T2= Perching+Sweeping+Need base insecticide application, T3= Perching only.The experiment was conducted in completely randomized design and one farmer’s field was treated as a replication. The insect infestation was monitored fortnightly by 20 hill counting and 20 complete sweeping.  BRRI dhan52  was cultivated in all farmers field.  The insect infestation, yield and yield contributing characteristics of the different treated plots of each field was compared by one way analysis of variance by Turkeys’ Post hoc Test.

During the experimental period insect infestation in both Taraganj and Pirganj was below the economic threshold level (ETL). Yellow stemborer (YSB),  rice leaf roller (RLR), long horned cricket (LHC), grasshopper (GH), green leafhopper (GLH), brown planthopper (BPH) and white backed planthopper (WBPH) were found at Taraganj in fortnightly sweeping and hill counting. Carabid beetle was not found during 20 hill counting in both the locations of Pirganj and Taraganj where continuously insecticide was used. Similarly, carabid beetle was not observed at Taraganj during sweeping in the same treated plot. Lowest natural enemies were observed both in Pirganj and Taraganj in T1 where insecticides used continuously. Thus the findings indicated that continuous use of insecticide has the detrimental effects on natural enemies in the rice field.

There was no significant differences were observed among the treatment for tiller, leaf and panicle/hill and also plant height at the experimental field of Taraganj and Pirganj. Significantly lower yield was observed at T4 in both the location at Taraganj and Pirganj. Most of the farmers of Pirganj and Taraganj did not use perching or sweeping and did not use line sowing. Lack of proper water and weed management, inappropriate insecticide use at early stage might negatively affect the yield in farmers practiced plots in both the locations of Pirganj and Taraganj. Moreover, no significant difference in yield was observed in other treatments in both the locations. In T1, Carbofuran 5G@ 10.0 kg/ha was applied five times but no yield advantage was observed. In T2 & T3 only perching and sweeping were done fortnightly or when necessary without use any insecticide but no yield reduction was observed. Therefore, it was found that continuous use of insecticide had no effect on yield and yield contributing characters of rice when insect infestation below the ETL. So farmers can avoid  continuous/indiscriminate use of insecticide which ultimately save production cost and save the environment from insecticidal pollution.
