Bed Planting Method for Establishment of Direct-seeded Aman Rice in Rice-wheat Cropping System

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Gazipur during wet season (June- November) of 2002 and 2003 to determine the effects of bed width, plant row number per bed and seed rate on the agro-cconomic productivity of direct-seeded rice (DSR) under bed planting in rice-wheat cropping system. Planting in 70, 80 and 90 cm width bed with two and three plant rows per bed along with (conventional) and 30, 45, 60 and 75 kg seed ha^-1 were tested. Bed planting with 70 cm width of beds increased yield DSR up to 16% over conventional method. It increased the grains panicle^-1 of rice. Weed infestation was less in bed planting. The cost of cultivation in bed planting (Tk 12,901-13,701 ha^-1) was lower than conventional method (Tk 18,045 ha^-1) whereas gross return, gross margin, and benefit-cost ratio in 70 cm beds (Tk 41,870-46,800 ha^-1, Tk 28,110-33,640 ha^-1 and 3.0 3.56, respectively) were higher than conventional method (Tk 39,910-41 ,360 ha^-1 , Tk 21, 8 10-23,280 ha^-1 and 2.20-2.29, respectively).

Objectives:

To determine the effects of bed width, plant row number per bed and seed rate on the agro-economic productivity of direct seeded rice under bed planting in rice-wheat cropping system.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), Gazipur during wet season (June-November) of 2002 and 2003. Soil of the experimental plot was clay loam with soil pH 6.78. Bed planting in 70, 80 and 90 cm (center-to-center of furrows) width bed with two and three plant rows per bed along with flat (conventional) planting and 30, 45, 60 and 75 kg seed ha^-1 were tested. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The unit plot size was 16 m² BR11 and BRRI dhan31 were used in 2002 and 2003, respectively. Raised bed and furrows were made manually for wheat crop by spade following the conventional land preparation. The height of beds was 15 cm. After harvesting of wheat, these beds were used for growing aman rice. Glyccl (41% Glyphosatc) @ 3.7 L ha^-1was applied 15 days before rice seed sowing for killing weeds. Rice on bed was grown as zero tillage condition. The conventional tillage plots were prepared by puddling. Nitrogen, P, K, S and Zn were applied @ 100, 20, 35, 10 and 4 kg ha^-1, respectively. One-forth of N and whole of P, K, S and Zn were applied at final land preparation in the conventional treatment. ln bed planting treatments, the basal doses were applied before sowing on the top of the beds. The remaining N was topdressed in three equal splits at 20, 40 and 60 DAS. Pre-germinated rice seeds were sown in rows in both bed and conventional methods. For conventional method row spacing was 20 cm. In 2002, seeds were sown on 23 June and that of on 30 June during 2003. Other recommended crop management practices were followed. Weed population and dry biomass weight of weed were recorded at the time of weeding from a sample area of 0.25 m² Rice was harvested in the first week of November in both the years. Grain yield and yield components data were collected at maturity. Cost of land preparation, bed preparation, labour, inputs and irrigation and price of the products and byproducts were recorded. Simple economic analysis such as total variable cost (TVC), gross return, gross margin and benefit-cost ratio (BCR) were done for different methods of planting.

From two years results it may be concluded that rice could be grown successfully on raised bed and agro-cconomic productivity of DSR could be increased by bed planting with 70 cm width of beds over conventional method in rice wheat cropping system.
