Effect of Split Application of Nitrogen Fertilizer on Yield and Yield Contributing Characters in T. Aman Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out in pots at Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh during the period of July to November 2002 to find out the effect of four nitrogen levels viz., To (without urea or control), T₁, (full dose of urea at two splits, 1/2 at 7 DAT + 1/2 at 15 DAT), T₂, (full dose of urea at three equal splits, 1/3 at 7 DAT + 1/3 at 15 DAT + 1/3 at 30 DAT) and T₃, (full dose of urea at three equal splits, 1/3 at 15 DAT + 1/3 at 30 DAT + 1/3 at 50 DAT) on yield and yield attributes of transplanted aman rice varieties viz., V₁, (BRRI dhan33), V₂, (Binadhan-4) and V₃, (Binashail). Significant influences of split application of N-fertilizer on plant height, panicles/plant, length of panicle. 1000-grain weight, grain yield/plant and biological yield/plant were observed. Interaction effect between variety and split application on panicles/plant, grain yield/plant and biological yield/plant were found significant. All characteristics mentioned were found significant for varieties.

Objectives:

The objectives of the study were to assess the effect of split application of nitrogen fertilizer on yield and yield attributes of T. aman rice and to find out the suitable splits for higher yield.

Methodology:

A pot experiment was conducted at the pot yard of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh during July 11 to November 17, 2002. The soil collected from the BINA farm. Soil texture was silty-loam having noncalcarious properties. The soil was neutral (pH 6.8) in nature (UNDP and FAO 1998). The experimental field was under sub-tropical climate characterized by heavy rainfall during the month of April to September and scatterly during the month of October to March (Andrade and Amorim 1996). Earthen pots of 30 cm x 20 cm containing 6 kg field soil in each and TSP, MP and Gypsum were mixed @ 135-70-60 kg/ha (1 ha = 3 x 10" kg fresh soil). The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications with two factors viz. T. aman rice variety and split application of nitrogen fertilizer. Three aman rice varieties viz. BRRI dhan33, Binadhan-4 and Binashail were used. Four treatments were applied nitrogen, viz., To (without urea or control), T₁, (full dose of urea at two splits, 1/2 at 7 DAT + 1/2 at 15 DAT), T₂, (full dose of urea at three equal splits, 1/3 at 7 DAT + 1/3 at 15 DAT + 1/3 at 30 DAT) and T₃, (full dose of urea at three equal splits, 1/3 at 15 DAT + 1/3 at 30 DAT + 1/3 at 50 DAT). Three seedlings of 30 days old were transplant in each pot on July 11, 2002. About 5-6 cm standing water was maintained in the pot up maturity. No disease was noticed. On grasshopper infestation occurred during booting stage, was controlled by spraying of Nogos @ lit/ha. The grains of the plants were protected from birds by mosquito net. Other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary.
