Effect of Date of Transplanting on Yield and Yield Attributes of Boro Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out at Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh, during December 2004 to May 2005 to assess the effect of transplanting dates on yield and yield attributes of boro rice genotypes. The experiment consisted of four genotypes viz., BRRI dhan28, TNDB-100, RD-2580 and Y-1281 and six dates of transplanting viz., January 9, 16, 23, 30, February 6 and 13, 2005. The results showed that the genotypes had significant influence on plant height, number of effective tillers, panicle length, number of filled grains, 1000-grain weight, grain yield, total dry matter hill^-1 and harvest index. Dates of transplanting showed significant influence on the above parameters except panicle length. The optimum date of transplanting for higher yield was January 16. The yield gradually decreased with delay in transplanting date after January 16. It was indicated that BRRI dhan28 showed the best performance among the genotypes studied and produced the highest grain yield when transplanted on January 16. Similar grain yield was also recorded in TNDB-100 with the same transplanting date.

Objectives:

The objective of the study was to assess the effect of transplanting dates on yield and yield attributes of boro rice genotypes.

Methodology:

An experiment was carried out with boro rice at Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh during December 2004 to May 2005. Seventy two plastic pots having the diameter and depth of 1.7 cm and 14 cm, respectively were collected from BINA farm and each pot contained 6.5 kg soil. The experiment consisted of four genotypes viz., BRRI dhan28, TNDB-100, RD-2580 and Y-1281, and six dates of transplanting viz, January 9, 16, 23. 30, February 6 and 13, 2005. Seeds of the genotypes were sown on 6, 13, 20, 27 December 2004, 3 and 10 January 2005 and 35-day old 3 seedlings were transplanted in each pot. The experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Fertilizers were applied in the experimental pots at the rate of 180, 100 and 180 kg ha^-1 in the form of urea, muriate of potash and triple super phosphate, respectively, The whole amount of all the fertilizers except urea were applied at land preparation and urea was applied in three equal splits, on the day of transplanting, 30 and 50 days after transplanting. At maturity, data on yield and yield attributes were recorded. Analysis of variance was done following the design with the help of computer package program MSTAT-C (Russell, 1986). The mean differences among the treatments were tested with Duncan's Multiple Range Test.
