Monitoring Pest and Natural Enemy Incidence Using Light Trap

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Rice insect pests and their natural enemies were monitored throughout the year by pennsylvanian light traps from 2013 to June 2014 at BRRI Headquarter, Gazipur and BRRI regional stations at Comilla, Habiganj, Barisal and Rajshahi to study the pest and their natural enemy incidence patterns in light trap and to create a database. Highest number of insect pests found at Gazipur followed by Barisal, Rajshahi, Habiganj and Comilla. The peak of GLH was observed during the month of October at Gazipur. GLH had an additional peak in May at the same location. BPH showed higher populations in November at all the locations except Comilla and Habiganj and the 2^nd peak was observed at Gazipur in the month of May. The highest peak of YSB was observed at Barisal in the month of October. Usually stem borer showed two peaks in a year- one in April and May and the other in the months of October and November which was not exceptional in the reporting year. The highest catches of natural enemies in light trap were recorded at Gazipur followed by Barisal. Green mired bug (GMB) population of Barisal was noticeably higher than other regional stations. There were two peaks of GMB population at Gazipur during April and November respectively. However, there was only one peak of GMB observed in November at Barisal.

Objectives:

To study the pest and their natural enemy incidence patterns in light trap and to create a database.

Methodology:

Rice insect pests and their natural enemies were monitored throughout the year by pennsylvanian light traps from 2013 to June 2014 at BRRI Headquarter, Gazipur and BRRI regional stations at Comilla, Habiganj, Barisal and Rajshahi. The traps were operated with 100 WATT white fluorescent tube light from dusk to dawn and the light was operated from the nearest electricity sources of the light traps. Insect pests and natural enemies those were attracted to the light of the light trap slipped into the hole of the trap and caught behind in a pot which was attached with the hole of the trap. Then the insect pest and natural enemies were collected, sorted, counted and the numbers were recorded in the data sheet every day.

The incidence of insect pests was higher at Gazipur than those of other locations. The total number of insect pests was the highest at Gazipur followed by Barisal, Rajshahi, Habiganj and Comilla. The abundance of GLH and as observed at all the five locations. The highest number or peak of GLH was observed during the month of October at Gazipur. GLH had an additional peak in May at the same location. BPH showed higher populations in November at all the locations except Comilla and Habiganj and the 2^nd peak was observed at Gazipur in the month of May. The highest peak of YSB was observed at Barisal in the month of October. The natural enemy population observed in the light trap didn’t show much variation in Comilla, Habiganj and Rajshahi, However, GMB population of Barisal was noticeably higher in the said three locations. There were two peaks of GMB population at Gazipur during April and November respectively. However, there was only one peak of GMB observed in November at Barisal. The predators, LBB, CDB and SPD were dominated population at all the locations. The highest peak of CDB was observed at Gazipur in the month of May and STPD was the dominating predator at Gazipur during the month of March.
