Survey and Monitoring of Bph and Its Natural Enemies in Sirajganj

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Planthoppers were monitored weekly by yellow and aerial sticky trap at Kanchaneswar, Aurangail, Vogholman and at Dobila, Hamkuria and Washin of Tarash Upazilla during T. Aman 2013 and Boro 2014 to monitor the population density, abundance and incidence of BPH and their natural enemies in the project area. Peak of planthopper incidence was found at Kanchaneswar on October 9 to November 6 at Vogholman and October 23 to November 6 at Aurangail. Like planthoppers, natural enemy population was also caught during the observation period. Dobila, Hamkuria and Washin showed that BPH landed in the seedbed mostly from the eastern direction and higher number was caught at 2.44 m height traps than those of the others.

Objectives:

To monitor the population density, abundance and incidence of BPH and their natural enemies in the project area.

Methodology:

Rice planthoppers were monitored using by yellow sticky (15.24 x 25.4 cm) and aerial sticky trap (25 cm X 35 cm). Planthoppers were monitored weekly by yellow sticky trap at Kanchaneswar, Aurangail, Vogholman and at Dobila, Hamkuria and Washin of Tarash Upazilla during T. Aman 2013 and Boro 2014 seasons respectively. In each season, sticky trap was operated in a plot in each location. Trapping was done diagonally at 10 randomly selected spots of the each field. At each trapping spot, sticky trap was hold flatly between two plants at the base and then the plants were shaked three times to capture insects on the yellow sticky traps. Yellow sticky traps used at Kanchaneswar, Aurangail and Vogholman during T. Aman 2013 season started from September 11 to November 6, 2013. The movement of BPH from rice fields at crop maturity and also their migratory habit from different host to rice field in different season were monitored by aerial sticky trap in the project area. Before ensue of transplanting the seedbeds of Boro and T. Aman were monitored for this purpose. The yellow sticky traps were placed in all direction (north, south, east and west) of the seed bed at a height of 2.44m and 4.88m respectively. The insect pests and natural enemies trapped in the sticky board were sorted identified, counted and recorded in a data sheet.

Peak incidence was found at Kanchaneswar on October 9 and that was from October 2 to November 6 at Vogholman and October 23 to November 6 at Aurangail. Like planthoppers, natural enemy population was also caught during the observation period. Among the natural enemies, green mirid bug population was higher in Aurangail on October 30 than the other locations, and the population was comparatively lower in kanchaneswar than Vogholman. Spider population was almost similar during the observation period (from September. to November, 2013) in the above mentioned locations. Monitoring of planthoppers with aerial yellow sticky trap at Dobila, Hamkuria and Washin showed that BPH landed in the seedbed mostly from the eastern direction and higher number was caught at 2.44 m height traps than those of the others. But the situation was different for white backed planthopper (WBPH) and small brown planthopper (SBPH).
