Analysis of Physical Environment in Rice-based Farming System Research for Target Area Delineation

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted to determine the target areas for appropriate set of rice - based farming systems technologies on the basis of physical environment of Bangladesh. Seven years data on major environmental parameters and soil characteristics were monitored and analysed for the delineation of the target areas.Verification trials of recommended rice-based farming systems technologies have produced higher yield and income as compared to farmers predominant systems in all of the se target areas . Limitations to both technologies and physical environment were also identified inorder t o determine the appropriateness of the recommended technologies .

Objectives:

To demarcate major target areas where the recommended technologies could be extrapolated.

Methodology:

Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) has developed rice based cropping systems technologies for the major agro-environments of the country. In the development process, along with the identification of key environmental parameters, the farming system research perspective was also used effectively to develop ways of increasing the productivity and income of the small farmers. Farmers were offered alternate rice-based technologies in the face of changing environments. Upon generating the appropriate technologies from 1 980 to 1 982, these were verified in similar environments during 1983 to 1988. These verification trials, called multilocation testing (MLT) programme has enormously helped in understanding the prevailing physical environment of the research sites, which provided information needed for this study . At each of the MLT sites, six small progressive farmers with 1000 m ²land/farmer were selected with the help of local extension agent, and an on-the-spot training and necessary inputs were provided to the farmers. A record of key environmental parameters was maintained. In addition to these, data on farmers' economic conditions were collected and were subsequently analyzed.

Achievement/Findings:

Verification trials of recommended rice-based farming systems technologies have produced higher yield and income as compared to farmers predominant systems in all of these target areas . This information can be used for the possible extrapolation of recommended rice-based technologies to other potential thanas in Bangladesh.
