Maxlmizing Nitrogen Efficlency in Wetland Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Deep placement of urea by lRRI designed spring auger applicator and the deep placement of urea supergranule (USG), farmer's practice and the improved methods of nitrogen application to wetland rice were compared at 26 locations in Bangladesh during 1985 and 1986. Deep placement of 58 kg N / ha from urea supergranule gave significantly the highest grain yield in almost all the locations which were statistically identical to those obtained with 90 kg N / ha from urea applied as per researcher's meth o d and timing except in three locations. The machine placed urea gave yields comparable to the researcher's method and timing of urea application in split doses. Similarly the farmer's practice of urea application gave yields similar to those obtained with the researcher's method and timing of urea application . The highest nitrogen use efficiency was obtained with the hand deep placed USG in boro seasons at all locations followed by in aman and aus.

Objectives:

(I) To evaluate nitrogen fertilizer use efficiency in wetland rice.

Methodology:

Twenty six field experiments on nitrogen use efficiency were conducted at the farmer's field in different locations of Bangladesh during aus, aman and boro seasons of 1985 and 1986. Out of these trials, 19 were at BRRI project areas under Joydebpur, Kaliakoir and Sreepur and the rest 7 were at Ganges floodplain (G. K project), Tista floodplain (Thakurgaon) and Saline soils (Satkbira) of the costal district. Nine trials were in aus, 12 were in aman and 5 in the boro season. Six treatments included in this study are in table I. The experiments were conducted in randomized complete block design whith three replications except the one a Swastipur (G. K. project) which was unreplicated. The unit plot size was 4x 3m and the test variety was IR50, BRI and BR16 in aus BR11 in aman and BR14, BR16 in boro season. The seedling ages were 25 to 30 days in aus (planted from March 14 to June 11) and 25 to 35 days in aman (planted from July 10 to Augut 29 depending on the farmer's situations) and 40 to 45 days in boro (planted between December 22 to January 22). Three to four seedlings per hill were planted at either 25 x 15cm or 20 X 20cm spacings. Phosphorus and potassium were applied as basal to supply 40 kg/ ha of P₂0₅ and K ₂0 each as blanket dose. No sulfur or zinc was applied since no acute symptom of deficiency of these elements was detected. The aus and aman crops of Joydebpur were under rainfed condition while all others were under irrigated condition . The crops were kept weed free from planting to harvest . Data on grain yield was obtained from a sample area of 5m² from each plot and were aadjusted at 14% moisture content.
