Improvement of Existing Rice Yield Through Recommended Fertilizer and Cultural Management at Farmers' Fields

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Grain yield of T Aman rice increased by 15-32% because of BRRI recommended cultural practices compared to farmer's practices (FP). None of the newly released BRRI varieties was superior to BR11 in terms of grain yield. In the Boro season, BRRI recommended cultural management resulted in 18-33%, higher grain yield of BRRI dhan28 compared to FP. In comparison to farmer's fertilizer management, grain yield of T /\man rice increased by 1.6-2.5 t ha- 1 because of soil test based (STB) fertilizer management or BARC recommendation at Kurigram site. Similar trend was observed with STB fertilizer management at Pirganj, Thakurgaon area s. Additional fertilizer costs incurred clue to STB fertilizer management resulted in Tk 7820-16320 ha-1 added income during T. Aman season and that of Tk 5525-19465 ha-1 during Boro season. Rice yield could be increased at farmer' s field if they only adopt BRRI recommended cultural practices. The increase in grain yield would be much more higher if fertilizers are applied based on soil test and /or BARC recommendation.

Objectives:

To find out the influence of balanced fertilizer and BRRl recommended cultural management on yield performances of BRRI released varieties.

Methodology:

The trials were conducted at Kurigram and Pirganj, Thakurgaon at farmer's fields during T. Aman 2002 and Bora 2002-03 seasons. There were two sets of experiments in each site- one set was with fertilizer management and the other one with agronomic practices. In first set, the fertilizer treatments were imposed based on soil test (STB) and BARC-1997 manual and were compared with farmer's fertilizer management. In the second set, BRRI recommended management was compared with farmers' cultural practices.Although I 0 farmers' were selected for survey data collection, a complete set of treatments was imposed in a farmers' plot which was repeated at least 3-5 times in a location, and each farmer's plot was considered as a block. Rice varieties used in T. A man season were BR 11 , BRRI dhan30, BRRI dhan31, BRRI dhan33 and BRRI dhan39 and that of BRRI dhan28 during Bqro season. For evaluation of improved agronomic practices all T. Aman varieties were used in both the locations. However, for evaluating fertilizer packages in T. Aman, BR II, BRRI clhan30 and BRRI dhan31 were used at Kurigram site and that of BRRI dhan33 and BRRI dhan39 at Pirganj, Thakurgaon site. At a time one nee variety was provided with each farmer for imposing treatments. Initial soil samples were collected at 0-15 cm depth from each farmer's plots. Ten sub samples were taken from each plot and composited and bagged with proper labeling. Soil samples were air dried, crushed, sieved and then sent to Soil Resources Development Institute for Chemical analysis. Grain yield was determined from three spots of 5m² area in each treatment. Rice crop was harvested when 85-90% grains in a panicle was golden yellow in color. Grain yield was adjusted at 14% moisture content. IRRISTAT-92 was u sed for analyzing data and mean s were compared followed by LSD. Combined analyses for the determination of the influence or fertilizer management and cultural management were done based on mean yield of rice varieties in a season. Additional benefit (Tk ha^-1) due to added P, K and S fertilizers compares to farmers practice were determined.

From the present investigation it is concluded that rice yield could be increased at farmer's fields by about 15-33% if only BRRl recommended cultural practices are followed and the yield increase would be much more higher if fertilizers are applied based on soil test and/or BARC recommendation.
