The Limit Passive Resistance of Cohesive Soil

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This paper presents the technique of estimating the passive resistance of cohesive soil by the upper bound limit analysis neglecting the effect of soil weight. A two-dimensional rigid structure extended up to the free soil surface sloping upward and the basic failure configuration consisting of the Interface, Transition and Rankine zones is considered to evaluate the passive coefficient for cohesion of the soil. The result indicates that the direction of interface transla tion greatly affects the compatible velocity and the energy disgipation. The translation of the loading rake perpendicular to the soil-structure interface satisfies the upper bound principles and the Mohr-Coulomb yield criterion. The energy dissipates by frictional sliding instead of plastic shearing along the soil-structur e interface and the surface roughness of the loaded structure governs the geometry of interface zone. The Rankine zone remains unaltered as long as the included angle of the structure and the free soil surface does not exceed a critical value. The passive soil resistance for a horizontal backfill surface are found exactly equal to those of the slip-line solutions. However, the upper bound limit analysis is applicable to any roughness of the structure and the backfill surface of any kind.
