Employment Generation for Rural Women in Grameen Bank Members Households in a Selected Area of Rangpur District

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The specific objective of this paper was to investigate the impact of Grameen Bank (GB) activities on employment opportunity of rural women. Forty GB households and forty non-GB households were selected randomly from Kotwali and Kaunia thanas of Rangpur district for this purpose. The. findings of the paper reveal that overall labour absorption from agricultural and non-agricultural sources increased by 53 percent and 75 percent for respondents after their joining in GB. New avenues of labour absorption for housewives and husbands opened up in many light jobs including teaching, tailoring and biri making and labelling. Compared to non-GB households favourable conditions also prevailed in labour absorption in the case of GB households.

Objectives:

To explore the increase of employment of the GB households in agricultural activities and to examine the pattern of new employment generation.

Methodology:

The samples were selected from among the GB members and non-GB members of concerned areas. In order to fulfill the objective the interview schedule was carefully prepared to record the required data on various aspects of the study. A draft schedule was tested by interviewing some members from GB and non-GB groups. The schedule was finalized after necessary correction, modification and adjustments. There are 34 villages in Topodhan and Sarai Union, where GB is working. There are 59 centres of GB in these villages - 25 centres in Topodhan and 34 centres in Sarai. For maintaining homogeneity and consistency and comparing the changes of participants before and after theybecame GB group members of these villages, two unions of Kotwali and Kaunia thanas which were very adjacent were selected purposively. From these villages 40 GB member households and 40 non-GB member households were chosen randomly. To collect consistent data, 14 samples in paddy husking, 14 samples in dairy rearing and 12 samples in biri making (few overlapping activity from that samples) were taken from every 40 samples of the two type of households. Data were collected from almost homogeneous groups, that is groups of similar socio-economic background during the period from August to September, 1997. After data collection, these were tabulated and analysed. The comparisons were made in the framework of both .before after and with-without situations. In comparing the impact in a before-period and after-period situation, physical data were expressed in value term by taking into account the price of the terminal year (single period) to avoid inflationary effect if any. The following criteria were followed m selecting the two group samples: a) GB and non-GB members were landless or near landless. b) The households were mostly women dominated. c) They were mainly concerned with three activities; i.e., paddy husking, dairy with poultry rearing and biri making. However, some minor activities such as production of crops, vegetables and spices, shop keeping, richshaw pulling, petty trading, etc., were done in both the groups.

Achievement/Findings:

It is evident from the findings that the total employment situation has been much more for the GB households after their joining GB compared to non-GB households. It has thus helped to improve the living standard of the participant households. The absorption of labour in GB households irrespective of labour categories showed the reduction of employment in arduous and low-paid jobs such as katha making, field labourers and working as maid servant. Employment of people in light or honourable new jobs such as working in grocer's shop, biri labelling and tailoring increased after the people joined the GB. The overwhelming employment in terms of man-days per family increased at the same time participation of GB men and women in light jobs and service sector has increased substantially.
