Effect of N, P and K Fertilizers on Growth and Foliar Nutrients of Gmelina Arborea Roxb. Seedlings

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In the present study, effects of a factorial combinations of N, P and K fertilizers each at three levels on height, collar diameter, dry weight of root, shoot and root/shoot ratio at the early growth stage of G. arborea seedlings in polybags were examined. After 10 months of growth values of the above parameters differed significantly among the treatments. Significant variations at 5% level in height, root, shoot and total dry weight and at I 0% in collar diameter of seedlings were due to added N. Interaction of NXP was significant at 5% level for shoot weight, total dry weight and root/shoot ratio. Seedlings of the highest vigour were obtained in the treatment N,P,K₂ Foliar N, P and K of 8 months old seedlings under different fertilizer treatments varied from 1.29 to 2.21 percent, 0.77 to 1.36. percent and 0.42 to 1.20 percent respectively.

Objectives:

To designed with the combinations of three nutrients (N, P and K) at three levels to see the effects on seedling growth and nutrient uptake.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in 20 cm x 25 cm polybags, which contained 5 kg soil and manure mixture at the ratio of 3: 1. Nitrogen , phosphorus and potassium each at three levels - 0, 1 and 2 and in a 33 factorial combination were added with the bag media, respectively from NH₄N0₃, Ca (H₂ P0₄)₂ and KCl The resulting 27 treatments were replicated thrice and the polybags were arranged in the field in a randomized complete block design .Healthy seedlings (30 days after emergence) were transferred on 2nd March, 1996 from bed, taking one for each bag. Irrigation in dry season (March-June) at a uniform interval and amount (250 ml I bag each alternate day) was provided. The growth of seedlings was evaluated from height and collar diameter at 2 months intervals up to 10 months. At the final stage, the seedlings were harvested and separated into root and shoot components. The leaf samples (recently matured; usually the 3rd leaf from the apex) were collected from each plant at 2 month intervals. The root, shoot and leaf samples were dried in the sun and finally in an oven at 65ºC for 48 hours and weighed. Oven-dry leaf samples were ground to pass through 0.1mm sieve for analysis. Dry ground leaf samples were digested with concentrated H₂S0₄ + H₂0₂ + Se digestion mixture in a micro-Kjeldahl digestion apparatus. Nitrogen was determined following micro-Kjeldahl distillation, P following vanadomolybdo-phosphoric yellow colour method and K in a flame photometer.

Achievement/Findings:

So it can be concluded that fertilizer application to G. arborea at the seedling stage was beneficial for its growth but whether this benefit was derived from higher uptake of the applied fertilizers or their higher assimilation cannot be predicted. Systematic study in this regard is necessary.
